Powerful Body Posture May Improve Self-Confidence in Children
[Source: Science Daily]'

A dominant body posture may help children to feel more confident in school. These are the findings of a new study by psychologists. The study provides initial evidence that simple poses can help students feel better at school.

Some body poses don't need further explanation: When a person sits with their arms crossed behind their head, resting their feet casually on a table, they are probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one's body and a hunched back, on the other hand, typically indicates insecurity. "Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also shape how a person

USDA Extends Waivers to Help Schools Feed Hungry Kids During COVID-19 Closures
[Source:  School Nutrition Association]

On May 15, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced the extension of three nationwide waivers: Non-Congregate Feeding, Parent Pickup, and Meal Times. These waivers provide operators of child nutrition programs the flexibility and support needed to continue to feed children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Secretary Perdue stated "As our nation reopens and people return to work, we want to continue to be flexible since there is not a one size fits all approach to feeding kids.

As CDC Posts Chart to Guide School Reopenings, Some Call for More Guidance
[Source:  Education Week]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a "decision tree" to guide decisions about reopening schools amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But the one-page graphic, posted Thursday night, still leaves unanswered questions for education groups that have called for more detailed federal guidance on the issue.

The chart-part of a series of decision trees for different businesses and public settings-guides school school leaders through a list of factors like their ability to screen students and staff for illness, to protect vulnerable people who are at higher risk, to encourage

Handling Developmental Regression in Children During COVID-19
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Many parents are noticing regression in their young children's development during the current COVID crisis. They describe tantrums, refusal to do schoolwork, toileting accidents, baby talk, intense and unpredictable emotions, hyperactivity, sleep difficulties, and more. These are difficult, unpredictable, and scary times and regression in a child's development adds significantly to parents' already high levels of worry. Knowing the role regression has in development can alleviate some of that anxiety and help parents

Children w/ Autism Face Higher Risk of Developing Eating Disorders
[Source: Psych Central]

A new study finds that autistic traits can set the stage for eating disorders.

Previous research has found that about 20 percent to 30 percent of adults with eating disorders have autism, while up to 10 percent of children with eating disorders have autism.

But until now, it hasn't been clear whether the autistic traits result from the eating disorders or precede them, according to researchers at University College London in England.

Children Unlikely To Be The Main Drivers Of The COVID-19 Pandemic
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

It is highly likely that children can transmit the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, but several factors suggest that children are unlikely to be the main drivers of the pandemic. Opening up schools and kindergartens is unlikely to impact COVID-19 mortality rates in older people, according to a systematic review that spanned 47 publications and was conducted by researchers at Karolinska Institutet. The paper is published in the scientific journal Acta Paediatrica.

7 Classic Children's Books That Teach Kids Mindfulness
[Source:  Mindful Magazine]

In recent years, there has been an explosion of  books for kids about mindfulness and contemplative practice. Many of these wonderful books are explicitly about discovering the present moment, impermanence, equanimity, and other similar concepts. The best of these books are deceptively simple. Many have few words or a single, simple idea. The most elegant ones do not resort to preachy exposition.

Some of the most insightful lessons, however, come from books that are not actually trying to teach mindfulness! Just as mindfulness has been around for a long time, so too have picture books that convey mindful messages. In many cases, we just never noticed these lessons before. As parents, and children's book authors ourselves, we have discovered that many of the best books about mindfulness are often just the best kids' books.

Easy at Home! Fork Paint Puffer Fish Art Project
[Source:  Woot Jr.]

As a native Floridian, I have spent a lot of time at the beach. I love breathing in the salt air, especially along the Atlantic coast. It can instantly relieve my stress and bring me back to my childhood. Summers on the coast were some of the best times of my life. One summer I remember finding a puffer fish that washed ashore, it was so fascinating to me! I have always loved sea life and I long for summer days on the coast as soon as the weather

SpEd Corner:  Serving Students During COVID-19: A Rural Educator's Story
[Source: Education Week]

When schools in Owley County, Ky., closed in early March, James Barrett hopped on his bus each morning to deliver meals to hundreds of students.

Then the special education teacher, who is also a bus driver for the rural district, would head home and log in for Zoom meetings with his high school special education students-some of whom have 3rd- and 4th-grade level skills in reading, writing, and math.

Pediatric Tx Corner: Helping Children Embrace Big Emotions
[Source:  Mindful Magazine]

I can clearly remember sitting in a parents group when my youngest was in elementary school, participating in a discussion about what we most wanted for our children. Being happy was at the top of everyone's list, and yet our ideas of what this meant and how to "make" it happen seemed unclear, at best, not to mention more than a little out of sync with how the world actually works. Parents at this workshop wanted their kids to make the team, get the part in the play, be accepted to the right college, remain strong and healthy, have good friends, never go through loss or grief, and the list goes on.
