Westland  Property Values Are on the Rise
Westland, MI (February 28, 2019) -  Recently, the 2019 Assessment Notices were mailed from the Department of Assessment to all property owners. This annual notice informs property tax payers of the change in assessed and taxable value of their property from the previous year to the current. The taxable value is applied to the various millage rates during the summer and winter tax collections to determine your overall tax bill. The assessed value is half of what the Department of Assessment determines to be the value of your property.

Taxable values for residential, commercial, and industrial properties are increased annually by the rate of inflation as determined by the Federal Government each year. The rate of inflation for use in determining the increase to taxable values for 2019 is 2.4%. If the property was purchased in 2018 or physical improvements were made to the property during 2018, the taxable value may increase more than 2.4%.

The  average increase to residential property assessments for 2019 was 13%. This means the total value of all residential properties in the City of Westland increased by 13%. Each homeowner's change in value may vary from this overall change as each neighborhood is analyzed individually to determine the level of change within that particular neighborhood. Commercial properties received an average increase of 7.2% and industrial properties received an average increase of 7.0%.

"Rising property values and a hot real estate market are great indicators of the health of Westland's local economy," stated Mayor Bill Wild.

Questions about your assessment notice may be directed to the Department of Assessment at (734) 467-3160.
