Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday, a moment in the life of Jesus that gives us the name of our church. Transfiguration is defined as a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state.
It really is a great name for a church.
Transfiguration says everything about what following Jesus is all about and where it leads. A life of following Jesus leads to many mountaintops and many moments of illumination along the way when we are changed into a more beautiful, spiritual state.
And then there is that ultimate promise that at the end of it all, after all our mountain-tops and dark valleys, after all of our transfiguring moments, there is that biggest, most beautiful transfiguration of all when we will behold in person the brightness and glory of God in person, in heaven. It is this greatest promise of all that sustains us through it all, through all the ups and downs of life.
Thank you, God, for this amazing promise! May it continue to transfigure out lives into a more beautiful and spiritual state.
You will be change, a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
-1 Corinthians 15:52

INTRODUCING TLC WEEKLY
With the immediacy of the internet, its speed and availability on a vast array of media devices in 2009, the digital TLC newsletter "Transmissions" made its appearance in the emails of TLC subscribers. Since then, Transmissions has served as an electronic bulletin board containing promotions of events, causes and activities at the church. In the fall season of 2018, Transmissions began a gradual makeover – a “Trans”formation if you will. Again, with the immediate availability of having it in subscriber email boxes at the click of a mouse, it seemed appropriate to have its contents reflect current TLC news and information with photos, links to videos, guest and weekly columnists, church bulletins for the upcoming worship services, special events taking place in the week ahead, and even some nostalgic recipes from past TLC recipe books.
"All that and more!" they say.
However, there often seemed to be some confusion when it came to what was
Transmissions and
Transcripts, and what were their functions. Transcripts is and remains to be the bi-monthly printed magazine mailed via the USPS to subscriber homes and businesses. Transmissions is/was the emailed weekly newsletter.
In order to define the function and purpose in one simple name, “TLC Weekly” was unveiled and is now coming to your media devices via email with – yes, weekly news and information. Conversation around the office has already adapted it, with people asking, “What’s coming up in the
Weekly?”
We hope that you, too, will adapt to the new TLC Weekly and continue to enjoy and benefit from its contents.

THE EVENT OF THE TRANSFIGURATION
AND TLC'S OUTSIDE CROSS
|
|
The cross, originally located in the (now gone) courtyard, has been with the TLC since the church was built in 1960.
|
It now stands boldly on the north side of the church property along 110th street.
|
|
The event of the Transfiguration marked a distinct crisis in the ministry of Christ. This is regarded as one of the times God authenticates Christ's ministry and Jesus rededicates Himself to it. In that high hour, Christ knew Himself. It also confirmed the growing faith of the inner circle of disciples, Peter, James and John, and prepared them for the great trial which was approaching – by showing them the real nature, glory and power of Jesus. The appearance of Moses and Elijah on the Mount also authenticates the prophecy that Jesus is the Messiah, the deliverer for all.
With this as background, we look at the cross of Transfiguration Lutheran Church.
The central figure is Christ and is symbolized by the
Chi-X,
the first two letters of “Christ” in Greek, and by
Iota-I,
the first letter of “Jesus” in Greek. These two symbols are combined to signify that the historical Jesus is God's Messiah.
Another symbol of our Lord is the
three crosses
signifying the event by which He delivers humankind from sin and death. In the early church the disciples were each given a symbol. Thus, in our cross we have the symbol for
Peter – the crossed keys; John – the chalice with a serpent's head; and James – the three shells.
Jesus' face and his robe shone bright as the light, and the effect is captured when the sun beams through the stained glass. Interwoven throughout the cross is a narrow ribbon showing that God, from the beginning, planned to deliver man.
Interwoven throughout the cross is a narrow ribbon showing that God, from the beginning, planned to deliver man.

Ash Wednesday at TLC
March 6
Services with Communion and Imposition of Ashes
Noon & 6:15pm
|
Stir the ashes make the sign;
mark us with the shadowed cross.
Where our Savior died and suffered,
where we gained at his great cost.
Give us wisdom, give us courage,
give us pow’r to do what’s right.
And when night’s cold dark is deepest,
Turn our darkness into light.

Not talking about the weather is hard to do...It's so “in your face” literally! That strong wind whipping across the parking lot last Sunday? Well, it was good to see a lot of folks come out for our RIC Sunday! I hope those who took part and also those who could “live stream” at home felt the Spirit's presence in that worship!
It's fun to think back to former winters, and how things can change through the years. I cannot remember having “snow days” very often when I was in school. We'd listen to WCCO radio for our town's name to be announced, and I still look for Milaca to go by on the alphabetical list at the bottom of the TV screen. When we lived up in Frazee, MN, teaching school, they didn't have many snow days either. Cold weather was the thing. It would get to minus 40 degrees quite often. When students knew where you lived and that it was your car parked out front, they would get some pretty bizarre ideas to “get back” at their teacher. One early morning we awoke to find Vicks Vapo-rub smeared all over our windshield, and frozen on. It was the hardest, most stubborn goop to get off that we can remember.
Some nice things did happen. People would ask if you'd like to use their fish house some evening, and we tried ice fishing for the first time. Walking out on the lake to get to the little shack? Being sure it's the right one is important. The small lake did not have many....nothing like the whole villages you see on lakes now. So, we sat there and were pretty much bored...no TV, not much light, staring down that hole for what seemed like hours. Finally a large fish swam up to the bait, and I was determined to catch it. It finally grabbed onto the lure but not quite hard enough. As it was about to take off, I put my arm down the hole and grabbed! We had one fish to take home. A wet arm is a small price to pay.

Patricia Riley

In Memory of Pat Riley
Adorning the altar this weekend is a quilt not only representing the Transfiguration of Jesus, but it's also a gift to the church from Bob Riley, husband of the late, Pat Riley, who passed away in 2017.
Bob commissioned the quilt to be funded with memorials given in his wife's name; and had the design created with symbolism of the Transfiguration story, TLC and the music of TLC. Notice on the full image the shape of the sanctuary cross is represented in many of the panels. Other panel images are explained below.
Bob is a long-time member of the chancel choir. The quilt will eventually be displayed in the music room where rehearsals take place.
