Greetings,
Many of our local friends do not know about one of our most interesting and successful annual events--Booktopia. I am hoping that this year more locals will join us.

Booktopia
is a two day event held in Manchester, Vermont in early May; this year it is Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th. Booktopia is a magical weekend with 8 or 9 authors discussing their work in small group sessions, culminating in a big event Saturday night where all the authors give a brief presentation about their book(s). It is a book lover’s dream. In addition, this year we are welcoming a supremely accomplished editor and publisher, Amy Einhorn (editor of
The Help
by Kathryn Stockett and
Big Little Lies
by Liane Moriarty), to join us to talk about the the journey of a book from manuscript to bookstore.
Authors and guests find Booktopia special because attendees are avid readers who have often read the books being discussed beforehand--so the conversation is rich and insightful. A $50 gift card and a Celebratory Dinner Friday night are included in the ticket price. The author lineup for this year is
here
.
Tickets
are going fast, but are still available. Come join the fun!

I Was Anastasia
Friday, March 29th at 6:00 p.m.
Manchester Center, VT
Please join us in welcoming back to the Northshire, Ariel Lawhon, a rising star of historical suspense, a former Booktopian author, and a staff favorite! She unravels the extraordinary twists and turns in Anna Anderson’s fifty-year battle to be recognized as Anastasia Romanov. Is she the beloved daughter, revered icon, and Russian grand duchess or is she an impostor, liar, and the thief of another woman’s legacy?
"Although we all probably know the basic history of Anna Anderson and Anastasia, I found this book incredibly fascinating and hard to put down. The author chose to relate it in alternating chapters telling one person’s story chronologically and the other backwards through time, and only by the end do we know how it all started. Although a work of fiction, the author incorporates great historic details and draws you into the story with imagination. She brings to vivid life a mystery that mesmerized the world for much of the twentieth century, in an incredibly creative format." — Reviewed by Tambra Johnson Reap, Northshire Bookstore

Negrophobia: An Urban Parable
Saturday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m.
Manchester Center, VT
We are thrilled to welcome Darius James to Manchester as he presents a classic novel finally back in print!
Negrophobia
is a wild-eyed reckoning with the mutating insanity of American racism. A screenplay for the mind, a performance on the page, a work of poetry, a mad mix of genres and styles, a scabrous, truly hilarious, and deeply scary novel like no other.
For this free event, Darius will be in conversation with Pam Breaux, the president and CEO of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.
"This feverish nightmare of racism is finally back in print after 25 years. Wickedly hilarious, raunchy, vile, and terrifying,
Negrophobia
is written as a screenplay whose racist protagonist Bubbles Brazil descends into a hallucinatory drug- and voodoo-induced phantasmagoria of black stereotypes. In just one sequence, Nazi-outfitted Disney characters celebrate the Last Supper with a plasticine Jesus as a skyscraper-sized African-American nose devised by the Zombie Master (and his trusted sidekicks Zombie Elvis and JFK’s head on spider legs) destroys the festivities!" — Reviewed by Dafydd Wood, Northshire Bookstore

by Patrick Radden Keefe
"This is an account of the murder and 'disappearing' of Jean McConville, a widow with 10 children in sectarian Belfast in 1972, and the growth and development of IRA's Provos wing, Sinn Fein, and the evolution of today's uneasy peace. Keefe calls it 'narrative nonfiction.' It is the story of a deliberately broken community. Being partisan, how quickly can nativism turn into nationalism and then radicalization? And what is the result? This is a study in morals, ethics, and loyalties. Terror and justification of violence quickly becomes the norm and has horrendous results on both the victims and the perpetrators. This book is a profound and truly important work that is timely and relevant in many varied ways.
Say Nothing
will reverberate today and tomorrow, and will ask the reader to pay attention. It is about collective memory, action, guilt, and communal and personal P.T.S.D. Most of all, it is a clear eyed, unromantic record of a horror that was perpetrated for decades and where reconciliation and truths are still in abeyance. I read this brilliant book in a week and turned around and started it again!" — Maeve Noonan

"Falter is a brilliant, impassioned call to arms to save our climate from those profiting from its destruction before it's too late."--Jane Mayer
