Day 29: Visiting a Menagerie of Animals back in Kansas City

Destination:   Kansas City, Missouri
Kansas City lies at almost the exact middle of the United States of America. It is the 38th most populous city in the US. It has the unusual distinction of having its historic core and metropolitan area straddle the Kansas-Missouri state line. July is the hottest month with a high around 90°F and January the coldest with temperatures around 23°.
Map KansasCityMO

Fun Facts:   Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers as a good place to build settlements for pioneers moving west.

Also:   Kansas City is known for its long tradition of jazz music and culture. The city was the center of the vaudevillian circuit in the 1920s, especially in the Orpheum Theatre. It is also noted for its cuisine, including its distinctive Kansas City-style barbecue, and its craft breweries.

And. . .Kansas City is home to three Champion sports teams! The Kansas City Royals won the baseball World Series in 1985 & 2015. The Kansas City Chiefs won the football Super Bowl in 1970 & 2020. Sporting Kansas City won the soccer MLS Cup in 2000 & 2013.

Art Form:  Art to Wear Animal Pins and Sculpture
JILL PinkFlamingo
Jill Claxton's unique and whimsical jewelry creations  are intended to remind  people not to take life too seriously.
"When my art causes people to smile I  know that I have achieved the desired  effect I want my creations to have." Jill's eclectic and individually designed pins are inspired by her love of whimsy and are presented as wearable art.

As Jill says, "I believe I've always looked
at things in a different, creative way. When I purchase an object I always change it up in some way putting my own personal spin on it. My father was an artist and each of my siblings are also artistic, so it's definitely in our genes."

"I have such respect for artists and the fascinating talents they have and share with others. I feel that being artistically creative has made
JILL Fox
me a better version of myself. It's helped me appreciate what it takes to be an artist. I've learned from the art I make how gratifying it can be to give someone pleasure from my creations and to bring a smile to someone's face. That's what makes me happy and is why I create the whimsical art I do."

The genesis of Jill Claxton's unique animal pins began when,  as president of the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City, she was given the honor of handing out ribbons at the American Royal Horse Show in Kansas City.
JILL OrigHorsePin
She wanted to wear a horse pin to mark the special occasion but couldn't find one that suited her creative tastes. She decided to make her own by purchasing a small plastic horse and wrapping it with small pieces of various materials. It turned out to be her whimsical way of celebrating the American Royal.

After retiring from a busy career, Jill remembered her horse pin and started making beautiful and unique wearable art animal pins. In 2008 she began concentrating on making a greater variety of pins as well as larger animal and spirit sculptures for sale at World's Window .

Jill creates her art in her home-based studio in Kansas City, MO. Whether a pin or sculpture, each is a one-of-a-kind work of art.

Jill says, "I was so fortunate to begin selling my creations at World's Window and it's been a joyful ride for me ever since. I'm so happy to be a part of their fantastic magical store."

Jill brings such sunshine to our store
whenever she comes to visit - both with her fanciful creations and her wonderful smile. Every single time there are pieces that just make us exclaim at the colors and details and smile at the whimsy. You might recall the gorgeous reindeer Jill created that we used to grace our 2019 holiday card. We all gasped in delight when she lifted it out for us to see. Did you notice the tiny birds perched on the deer? Jill has added tiny birds to several of her animal sculptures. As you look at her art, watch for the birds and other tiny details. And, remember, today's the day to choose pieces at 20% off!
