Seniors by the Wayside: Quilting

This month is a treat for quilters with presenter Phyllis Thompson, a member of Highland PC, who quilts as a hobby. She will share her creative expertise in needlework and textiles that she developed over a 25-year period. Phyllis uses a lot of bright colors and many different techniques in her quilts; she will bring several quilts to share.
Our Senior group meets on the second Wednesday of each month over a brown bag lunch to hear invited speakers on various topics. We will provide the beverages. While we focus on the interest of senior adults, we have no age limit and persons of all ages are welcome at these meetings!

Detained Immigrant Visitation Program

Walking Together: Information and Training Session

This past fall, the FPC Perspectives Adult Sunday School Class completed a course entitled "Welcoming the Stranger: A Biblical View of Immigrants, Refugees, and other Outsiders," and class members were struck by the overwhelming Biblical witness to God's heart for foreigners and strangers and by God's repeated commands to welcome and care for refugees in our midst. We also learned that the York County Prison is one of the east coast's largest detention facilities for asylum-seekers who are navigating the complicated legal process of requesting sanctuary.
We wanted to know how we could show Christ-like love and friendship to these vulnerable people in our own backyard. We discovered a new local initiative called Walking Together, which is co-sponsored by Landisville Mennonite Church, the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center, and the York County YWCA.
Anyone who is potentially interested in volunteering-or who would simply like to learn more about the visitation program-is invited to attend this informational session. You're not committing to anything by coming to this meeting! All members of the congregation and the broader community are welcome.

Saint Patrick's Concert with Charlie Zahm

Join the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation for "Saint Patrick's Concert with Charlie Zahm". The concert will be upbeat and entertaining in honor of Saint Patrick and the Irish. Charlie Zahm is a very talented Celtic musician, who will delight you with songs from Ireland and possibly a few from Scotland!
Charlie will be joined by the Paloma School of Irish Dance from Lancaster, PA They have performed at many venues and Celtic events and have many dancers who compete around North America and the world. Also performing is, Kendrah Tozzo, a young and very skilled harpist. She also performs with the Brandywine Harps.
Before the Concert, from 5pm to 6:30pm, there will be an open house at the Covenanter Church. Located across the road from Middle Octorara, the maintenance and restoration of the Church and attached one-room school is the mission of the Foundation. Come view history and discover the collections which brings it to life.

Lenten Retreat: Praying the Life Cycle

This one-day Lenten experience
will be a wonderful time apart for all of us, no matter our "age or stage." Join us for fun and fellowship, along with encouragement in nurturing a life-giving spirituality that helps us discover God's purpose and wholeness wherever we find ourselves along life's journey.
This lively and thought-provoking day will include engaging teaching on expanding our prayer life and delving into Scripture from two of Lisa's interactive books-26 Ways to Pray the Alphabet: Daily Spiritual Practices to Help You Ask, Begin, Center, and Do and the fascinating Writing in the Margins: Connecting with God on the Pages of Your Bible. This event is offered at no charge (although donations to defray the cost are greatly appreciated), continental breakfast and lunch will be provided, and childcare is available. All are warmly invited, and guests are especially welcome!

Opioid Impacts on the Family, Helping Struggling Teens with Doug Cwienk and Jacob Riley
Doug Cwienk used his strong background in science to help his son by learning about the changes that take place in your brain as a result of addiction. When Doug realized how significant this information was and how little is known about it by the general public, he decided to spread this knowledge. He and his son, Nate, intended to work together, but unfortunately Nate died of an overdose in 2017. So, Doug now speaks on the science and the experience that Nate went through.
Speaker Augustus Feleccia was an athlete all his life and grew up the oldest of three children in a happy family. When he got to college, a football injury left him paralyzed, lost, and addicted to opiates. Depressed and nearly dead, Augustus was then blessed with the gift of faith that changed his life immediately and for the better. Now, he works for a non-profit where he spreads a message of hope to young people in need of it, and shares how recovery is not only for the addict.
Jacob Riley, who lost his brother to an overdose, will share out of his family experience.

Join a dozen other churches from Chester County and the Main Line to serve together in the community on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Your congregation members will be able to choose from service projects offered at local churches or neighborhood organizations. These are some of the opportunities already identified:
- making hygiene kits and prepare meals for the homeless
- cleaning the grounds of a school for the blind
- engaging with seniors at assisted-living facilities
