If You Share Your CU Story with One Lawmaker, You've Made an Impact!
Stand up with your peers at this year's Louisiana Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) on April 30 in Baton Rouge. Let your legislator know the enormous value that credit unions bring to their communities, so they will have credit union's best interest in mind when crafting and voting on important bills.

The state GAC is Louisiana's premier advocacy event of the year, providing the opportunity to seek and understand the political environment facing credit unions. State GAC attendees will have opportunities to meet face-to-face-both with legislators and some of the most powerful decision makers in Louisiana.

New this year is a condensed one-day schedule! Registration and networking will begin at 9:30 am with program to commence at 10:00 am. All attendees will be transported to the Capitol at 4:00 pm for lobbying efforts. The evening will conclude with our yearly Legislative Seafood Social at the Capitol Park Museum from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

Not only are we bringing back yearly favorites like Jeff Brooks and Rob Rieger from Adams and Reese LLP and Ryan Donovan from CUNA, we also have Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry and our new NCUA Regional Director, Keith Morton on this year's agenda.

Senate Banking Comm. recommends NCUA nominees Hood and Harper
NCUA Yesterday, the Senate Banking Committee recommended NCUA Board nominees Rodney Hood and Todd Harper for confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Both were approved by voice vote indicating that there was no opposition. Mark Calabria was also recommended by the committee to serve as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).

Hood was resubmitted for the open seat by President Donald Trump in January, after being nominated in the previous Congress but did not see a vote. He previously served as vice chair of the board from October 2005 to August 2010. If confirmed, he would replace board member Rick Metsger for a term ending August 2023.

Harper, nominated in February, served as director of public and congressional affairs and as the chief policy advisor to the chairman at NCUA until 2017. If confirmed, he would take the open seat left vacant by former chair Debbie Matz for a term ending April 2021.

Despite the market roller coaster that ended 2018, we continue to see strong jobs numbers, low unemployment rates, and high consumer confidence. As we monitor how our economy performs in 2019 and into 2020, it is important to remain watchful on a few indicators that provide insight for our industry.

Here are five key economic indicators that CUNA Mutual Group recommends to watch in 2019.
  1. Unemployment Rate
  2. Vehicle Sales
  3. Consumer Confidence

Campus Federal Volunteers With LSUHSC School of Dentistry at Annual Give Kids a Smile Event

On February 22nd, Campus Federal joined the dental, dental hygiene, and pre-dental students at LSUHSC School of Dentistry to volunteer with faculty and staff for the annual Give Kids A Smile event. Give Kids A Smile was designed by the American Dental Association (ADA) to provide education, preventive and restorative care to low-income children who do not have access to dental care. The event, part of a larger, month-long event called National Children's Dental Health Month, has the goal of developing good dental habits in children.

This year, over 140 students from Esperanza Charter School participated in the program. The children received dental exams, including cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatment and visited stations where dental hygienists and hygiene students discussed oral hygiene tips and healthy food choices. The children also enjoyed outside activities and taking pictures at the Photo Booth sponsored by Campus Federal.
