Opportunity Funding visits showcase state investment
Governor Carney visits with students at Red Clay Consolidated School District's Forest Oak Elementary School as part of his multi-school Opportunity Funding tour throughout Delaware.
Governor Carney along with Delaware Education Secretary Susan Bunting and several local legislators have been touring schools throughout the state this month to learn more about the programs that the Opportunity Funding initiative has supported.
Opportunity Funding is a state initiative started this year that provides $75 million over three years for all Delaware districts and charter schools.
For the first time in Delaware, districts and charters schools are receiving weighted funding to
better support the state's most disadvantaged students. The funding directly supports English learners, low-income students and new mental health resources in schools.

Register now for 6th annual Pathways conference
Registration is now open for the 6th annual Delaware Pathways Conference from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 6 at Dover Downs.
Once again, this year's Delaware Pathways Conference will highlight The Pathways Experience. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak and interact with students currently enrolled in a Pathways program and to hear their success stories.
Educators, employers, postsecondary institutions, policymakers, and community-based organizations are invited to see first-hand how the Delaware Pathways programs prepare students for success in both career and college readiness, while helping to fill talent pipelines in the state's top industries.

Recruitment fairs attract educators to DE school jobs

Delaware schools are participating in recruitment fairs in an effort to continue attracting outstanding teachers.
The state's next education recruitment fair will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 21 at Appoquinimink School District's Appoquinimink High School in Middletown. Pre-registered participants will be allowed admission starting at 9 a.m. Walk-in registration is available at 10 a.m. Register online at https://www.apllc.org/. Applicants should bring copies of their resumes.
More than 150 applicants attended the Saturday, Feb. 22 educator recruitment event at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Ocean City, MD.
Open to students, current educators and those looking to become Delaware educators - including potential career changers - the fairs allow applicants to meet directly with districts, charter schools and DDOE staff.

State Board continues seeking student voices
Students from around the state joined student school board member Dorcas Olatunji in Dover this month for the first-ever State Board Student Education Forum.
The Delaware State Board of Education soon will open applications for its student member for the 2020-21 school year. At the same time, the board is hosting student forums to h
elp expand the input of its current student member as well as inform the board's discussions about education in Delaware.
"The mission of the State Board of Education is to provide voice and leadership for Delaware citizens to ensure that the education system meets the needs of each Delaware student," said State Board Executive Director Jenna Ahner. "The student forums are a terrific opportunity to gather input from students on how we can meet these needs."
This year marks the first time in Delaware history that a public high school student has been represented on the State Board. In August,
Dorcas Olatunji, a senior at Charter School of Wilmington, was chosen from 40 applicants to become the board's first student member. Delaware lawmakers passed a bill in 2018 that added both a student and a teacher to the school board in non-voting roles.
As a student member, Olatunji attends the board's monthly meetings, devotes considerable time to reviewing policies and programs scheduled for State Board action, and participates in trainings and strategic planning sessions.
Olatunji also has helped to coordinate the board's first student education forums, which started this month. The two-hour public meetings are aimed at gathering input from high school students statewide. At the first forum in Dover, attendees
discussed pressures that reduced their motivation to learn, resources to address school needs, class sizes, start times and more.
"I'm so excited about these conversations on equity, engagement and equal voices," Olatunji said. "In just a few hours, we were able to gather important perspectives that need to be shared"
The State Board will host additional Student Education Forums on Saturday, March 14 and Saturday, April 18. To attend, students are encouraged to register online, though registration is not required.

Delaware TOY attends national induction program

Rebecca Vitelli, 2020 Delaware Teacher of the Year, represented the First State earlier this month at the 2020 National Teacher of the Year Program Induction. Hosted by Google at several of its campuses in the Palo Alto area, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) conference brought together the 2020 teachers of the year from across the country as well as the U.S. territories.
The teachers participated in meaningful professional learning that will continue throughout the program year. Speakers included Khan Academy founder Sal Kahn and past state and national teachers of the year. Thank you, Rebecca, for representing Delaware so well!
