Fall 2020
Network Virtual Gathering
Let's get to know each other! We have a great group of Network members, and there is so much valuable experience to share. Join us for an informal Network Chat on Thursday, November 19th from 1:00 - 2:00pm EST. For this first gathering, we want you (our members) to get acquainted with each other, share the ways that you are currently teaching or promoting humane education, and discuss any challenges you are experiencing during this unexpected time. This Network Chat is exclusively for HEART Network members. We look forward to seeing you there! For details and to register, visit the HEART Network Virtual Gathering signup page and enter the password "HEARTNetworkMember" when prompted. Space is limited, so register today!
A Humane Halloween Craft
Celebrate Halloween by appreciating black cats! This is a really simple and fun activity that you can do with youth of all ages.

Teach young people about superstitions that have been spread about black cats and help to dispel them. Guide students through the craft, which encourages kindness toward and adoption of these animal companions who are far too often mistreated or overlooked.
Building Love Through Understanding
Environmentalist Baba Dioum said, "In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught." Similarly, people are much more likely to protect who they love. As humane educators, we must challenge the many misconceptions that young people have about other species so that they can better understand them. Then, they are more likely to feel love for them, and therefore are more likely to protect them.

In this lesson, Attitudes Toward Animals, students are invited to consider how they perceive different animal species and why. They will review diverse animal perspectives held by historical figures who have influenced the ways in which society treats other living beings. Students are then tasked with developing their own statement to represent the human-animal relationship. When we challenge ourselves to better understand the complex social, emotional, and intellectual lives of non-human animals, it is an opportunity to expand our circle of compassion.
