Dear Ones,
Happy New Year! As we enter 2020, I am feeling grateful to be a part of this community and our faith tradition.
As we face with anxious uncertainty the ramifications of our country's military provocation against Iran-and as we find ourselves already standing on the fracturing foundation of our democracy-the stakes as we begin this new year feel very high indeed. And so I feel grateful for you. For gathering around in circles, gathering around the table, for chalice lightings and check-ins, for emails with poetry and news articles, for coming together each week to worship-I am grateful to be a part of a community that has found its way through hard times before and knows that by continuing to practice our values together we will find our way through again. That even in this very imperfect world we still know how to share life's journey and celebrate many paths and act to make a difference. That we still know the value of gathering together to inspire joy and justice in one another and in our wider world.
Thank you to everyone who made our holiday celebrations possible, from Decking the Halls to Winter Solstice to Christmas Eve, and the poetry and new year services that allowed me to take some time away. Thank you to food makers, and craft organizers, to makers of sacred space. Thank you to worship planners and participants, to all who had a hand in the administrative flurry of producing four orders of service at once before the office closed for the holidays. Thank you for the unseen work, the phone calls and hands reached out to care for one another in tender times. Thank you for all that you do to weave this tapestry of love we call community in this time when it is so badly needed.
Our worship theme this month is "What does it mean to be a people of
Integrity
?" Amidst all the turmoil, a new year-
a new decade!
-beckons with hope and opportunity. As we continue to live into our wholeness, individually
and together, let us find ourselves rooted in the integrity that already lives within us. This month brings the annual celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his towering moral vision which still urges us on today. And this year January also brings the celebration of our congregation's 70th anniversary, an opportunity to honor our history and look forward to the next 70 years of our faith's presence in Marin. "
Roots hold me close, wings set me free
," we sing in our beloved
Spirit of Life.
This month may we deepen into an integrity both rooted and winged, drawing strength from nourishing roots and soaring free with the wings of vision.
With you on the journey,
Rev. Marcus Hartlief

Sharing Joys and Concerns
|
|
"Joys and Concerns" are an important part of our Sunday service and we want to hear yours. Pink slips - no longer in our order of service - are in a basket at the entrance to the sanctuary. If you have a joy or concern to share, please pick up a pink slip and fill it out. The ushers will collect them during the first hymn.

Race: the Power of an Illusion - Film and Discussion co-sponsored by Social Justice and Adult Education Committees
January 12 Episode I "The Difference Between Us"
January 26 Episode II "The Story We Tell"
February 9 Episode III "The House We Live In"
All sessions will be 12:15-2:00 pm in the Fireside Room.
In these sessions, we will view and discuss each of the hour long segments of this powerful DVD that explores what race really is. Soul Matters Small Groups
|
Now is the time to join a Soul Matters group! Soul Matters groups are our small group ministry, sometimes known as chalice circles or covenant groups. New Soul Matters groups are forming now and will begin meeting in February.
Soul Matters Groups allow members and friends to join a group of 6-10 people, lead by trained facilitators, who meet once a month. Participants receive a packet on the monthly worship them. The meetings use a structured format to create a space for sharing the things in life that are really important to us, and deepen our connections with each other. We recommend that people participating in this program commit to going to each monthly meeting, and make a one-year commitment. You do not need to be a UUCM member to join a group.
To sign up, fill out a form available in the foyer or email Rich Cohen at
rccohen57@gmail.com by January 20th.
