Many churches, Christian leaders, and pastors are advocating that people vote for either Trump or Biden. There is a group called “Evangelicals for Trump” and another group called “Evangelicals for Biden.” What is the position of Calvary Church? At Calvary, our commitment is to the proclamation of the Gospel, not to advocate a particular political candidate or party. We are much more concerned with the spiritual vitality of the church than seeking political power or influence. The late Francis Schaeffer wrote The Great Evangelical Disaster, which predicted that Evangelicalism would end in disaster if it turned from the Word of God. Isn’t his prediction coming true?
Do any of us really want to claim that Jesus is on the side of our chosen political candidate? That would mean that anyone who voted for the opposite candidate was voting against Jesus! I encourage you to be informed about the issues of this election, listen to the candidates at all levels of government, and vote for the candidates whom you believe are most likely to uphold the principles of the Word of God.
Remember that the governing authorities are instituted by God ( Romans 13:1–2). “It is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another” ( Psalm 75:7). So our trust should not be in any political party or candidate but in the living God — in Christ alone. Do any of us know the purposes of God regarding our nation? We do know that God is in control and Lord of all, whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden is elected president. At Calvary, our mandate will remain to be and make authentic followers of Jesus Christ.
All of us need to be in prayer for our nation in these difficult times and ask God to guide us as we go to the voting booth. Whoever is elected, we will not panic, we will not be shaken, but we will continue to proclaim the Gospel and trust our great unchanging and unchangeable God.
