Chicago Fair Workweek Ordinance
The City Council is signing on to a new law that will make it difficult for employers to schedule flexible work schedules. This will be extremely difficult for small businesses who employ fifty or more individuals in the aggregate within a dwelling unit, residence, or any other location. Please join the coalition at
Work Your Way and write a letter to our local elected officials.

Soraya Rendon, owner of
Chilam Balam at
3023 N. Broadway, had dreams of coming to American since she was 7 years old. She used to watch American television shows that featured Chicago, and knew this was the city she wanted to be in. She also always dreamed of being an entrepreneur. When she was a young adult, she decided to venture to Chicago with just a couple hundred dollars, no job, and her family back in Mexico City.
Not speaking any English, Soraya started taking English classes and applying for jobs. Through trials and tribulations, she eventually got a job as a mortgage broker. But when the market collapsed, she was looking for a new business to start and a new passion. That's how Chilam Balam came to be!
Soraya learned everything completely from scratch: restaurant design, making a menu, restaurant operations, etc. She wanted a Mexican restaurant unlike anything anybody's ever seen before. Something quaint, beautiful, and that gave her a sense of home.
Chilam Balam has been a Lakeview gem since it opened, serving delicious tapas-like Mexican plates in a fun, cozy atmosphere. The menu is always changing, with Chef Natalie Oswald, constantly coming up with new, tasty ideas to add to the fresh tasting options. Just recently, Chilam Balam won the award for the Best Farm to Table restaurant at the Lakeview East Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony! You can see the list of farmers they use on their website.
We urge you to make a visit to Chilam Balam soon and congratulate Soraya for her recent win, and thank her for her dedication to the Lakeview East community! We are so lucky to have Soraya as a member of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, and are looking forward to dining at Chilam Balam for many years to come.

Roscoe Street from Monday, February 4 to Friday, March 1, 2019. There will be lane restrictions and restricted parking on Roscoe and Sheffield.

Clark Street to close between Roscoe to Buckingham
March 4-April 7, 2019
Extensive advance utility relocation work is required prior to starting major construction on Phase One of CTA's Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Program: Utilities in adjacent alleys and streets are being relocated so we can build new 'L' track structure foundations as part of RPM. Utility work began in 2018 and will be completed later this year. Work in Clark Street includes relocation of gas, water, and telecommunications utilities. Sewer work and street reconstruction will be done in conjunction with future track work. A full closure of Clark from Roscoe to Buckingham for approximately five weeks is required to relocate utility lines and equipment underneath Clark to make room for new track structure foundations.
|
The
CTA will also start track work as part of the first phase of the Red Purple Modernization starting on
March 1, 2019 to March 25,2019. This 24 hour a day, 7 day a week construction activity is specific to the CTA's right of way so there will be impacts to the alley and the area of Clark Street from School north to Roscoe.
