Gail Z. Martin writes urban fantasy, epic fantasy and steampunk for Solaris Books, Orbit Books, Falstaff Books, SOL Publishing and Darkwind Press. Her urban fantasy series include Deadly Curiosities and the Night Vigil (Sons of Darkness). Her epic fantasy series include Darkhurst, the Chronicles Of The Necromancer, the Fallen Kings Cycle, the Ascendant Kingdoms Saga, and the Assassins of Landria. Her newest titles include Tangled Web, Vengeance, The Dark Road, and Assassin's Honor. As Morgan Brice, she also writes urban fantasy MM paranormal romance.
John G. Hartness is an author, publisher, and podcaster from Charlotte, NC. He is the author of multiple novel series, co-founder and publisher of Falstaff Books, and a member of the Authors & Dragons podcast. Falstaff Books is a small press dedicated to publishing the best of genre fiction's "misfit toys," having published over 50 titles with authors ranging from first-timers to NY Times bestsellers, with no signs of slowing down any time soon. John is the award-winning author of the urban fantasy series The Black Knight Chronicles, the Bubba the Monster Hunter comedic horror series, the Quincy Harker, Demon Hunter dark fantasy series, and many other projects.

- Contest now open. Closes March 19.
- Open to all CWC members and to non-member residents of North and South Carolina.
- Entries must be an original and unpublished. This includes blogs, Facebook, websites and any other digital media.
- Fiction story between 1500-4000 words.
- Multiple entries are NOT allowed.
- Entry Fees: CWC Members: $20.00, Non-members: $25.00
- Prizes will be awarded in May at the CWC general meeting.
- First place: $250.00, Second place: $150.00, Third place: $50.00.

Workshop: Writing from the Heart in Verse
Saturday March 9, 2019 10:00 am-12:30 pm
Linda Vigen Phillips is leading this workshop for creatives teenagers to age 99--to explore writing in free verse to describe life's peaks and valleys and/or to constructively deal with an emotional issue. She will dissect works of contemporary masters of the novel written in verse and lead you in some exercises to help tap into the power of verse for your own stories.
Linda is the author of two realistic fiction novels told in verse:
Crazy, that depicts the struggles of a teenager in the 1960s, coming to terms with her mother who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and
Behind these Hands the story of how a teenage piano prodigy's life is upended when her two younger brothers are diagnosed with Batten disease, a neurodegenerative disorder.
Cost is $30 for CWC members and $40 for non-members.

Lisa is the author of nine novels for young people, including the five-book

She has served as president of the Charlotte Writers' Club, is a former board member of the North Carolina Writers' Network, is a mentor in the SCBWI Mentor Program, and critiques manuscripts for Writers' Digest. She lives in North Carolina.

Editorial Scholarship Opportunity
About the Scholarship/A Note from Kelli
As a long-time member of CWC and a former board member, I am happy to offer a scholarship to assist aspiring writers in their journey toward publication. This scholarship will be awarded to the CWC entrant who best demonstrates a commitment to produce a written work intended for publication(Fiction or Non-fiction, NO poetry). The Scholarship encourages writers to submit their work to a publisher by providing funding for professional editorial services.

CWC Open Mic Nights at Mug's Coffee!

Open Mic Night - March 15th from 7pm-9pm
CWC and Mug's Coffee are partnering to provide an opportunity for CWC Members to read their work every third Friday of each month from 7pm - 9pm. Registration is limited to 12 readers who must be CWC members. Each reader will get 10 minutes to read their work.
This is a great opportunity for our members to share what they've written and gain experience reading in public. This is a necessary skill to promote your writing. The added benefit is being able to network with other writers.

I was watching a cop show the other day and began to notice the constant usage of the expression "OK." It was like: "Are you OK?" and "OK, where have you been," and "If it's OK with you . . " There was "
Everything's gonna be OK
," and
"Can you OK my request . . ." It can mean assent or consent, green light or neat and tidy. It can be a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or interjection, declarative, interrogative or exclamatory. It is used in languages all over the world. Its origin is obscure, and has been (sometimes hotly) debated for nearly 200 years. And even its spelling is uncertain.
Now why do I bring this up? I just thought it was interesting. Okay? DDC
