Dear Friends,
Spring is a time of rebirth: the flowers are blooming, the pollen is flying, right whales are calving and we are already thinking about the 2020 sea turtle season. (Leatherbacks begin nesting in March) So if you are thinking of volunteering with Canaveral National Seashore, spring is a great time to start. Contact Avia Woulard at 386-428-3384 ext. 240.
This month we are celebrating the 100
th
anniversary of the 19
th
Amendment to the United States Constitution giving women the right to vote. As Americans the right to vote is something we take for granted, but just a mere 100 years ago our mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters did not have these rights and then the fight was on to add women of color and Native Americans. Now all citizens have the right to vote in our free elections! Celebrate Women’s History month and learn about the National Parks dedicated to women that changed history!
Stay Safe & See you at the beach!

We will be burning approximately 1200 acres in the Apollo district. This will assist in decreasing fuel for wildfires & rejuvenate the habitat for many scrub species. Scrub jays, gopher tortoise & other birds live in zones that should have fire in their ecosystem.

March is Women's History Month
The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
Women in America first collectively organized in 1848 at the First Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, NY to fight for suffrage (or voting rights). Organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, the convention sparked the women’s suffrage movement.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla, March 1, 2020 – The
ACA Soundscape Field Station
, a partnership between Atlantic Center for the Arts and Canaveral National Seashore, announces Dr. Nathan Wolek of Stetson University as its 2020 artist-in-residence. This residency program invites musicians, composers, and ecologists to find innovative approaches that help preserve a healthy and balanced soundscape for current and future generations. The sounds of our environment tell a story of wildlife biodiversity and the health of people living in that community. “It is important to provide innovative opportunities for sound artists to engage the community with the natural world in a new way that will inspire us to protect this resource,” says Eve Payor, ACA Director of Community Programs. Atlantic Center for the Arts has over 40 years of experience in producing artist-in-residency programs that attract distinguished artists from all over the world.

DID YOU KNOW?
Sea Turtles - Nomads of the Deep
|
|
Sea Turtle Nesting Season (March - October) is underway!
- Did you know that nearly 90% of sea turtle nesting in the U.S. occurs in Florida?
- Sea turtles have remained almost unchanged for 110 million years and are some of the oldest creatures on Earth.
- Sea turtles remain underwater for hours at a time if they are sleeping or resting. When active, they surface several times an hour to breathe.
- After their first frantic crawl from the nest to the ocean, male sea turtles never return to the shore, and females come back only long enough to lay eggs
- The contiguous beaches of Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach counties are the most important loggerhead nursery areas in the Western Hemisphere, attracting more than 15,000 female loggerheads each May through August.
- Leatherback turtles can dive deeper than any other air-breathing animal except perhaps sperm whales and elephant seals
- Female sea turtles often appear to be weeping as they nest; the main purpose of these tears is to remove salt from the turtle’s body
- In summer, an ancient reproductive ritual begins. The female, who usually nests every two to three years, leaves the sea and crawls ashore to dig a nest in the sand. She uses her rear flippers to dig the nest hole, where she deposits about 100 eggs the size of ping-pong balls. When egg-laying is complete, the turtle covers the eggs, camouflages the nest site, and returns to the ocean. Nesting turtles may return to the beach several times in a nesting season to repeat the process.
Sea Turtle Threats
