Art education, with all the strands, are necessary skills in and of itself but also enhances all the core subjects. Today the STEM subjects are garnering a lot of attention to succeed in the 21 st century but recent brain research has shown these skills are best developed with a combination of education in the arts (STEAM).
When people initially think of art, they usually conjure up thoughts of paintings and sculptures. Given a little more time, music comes to mind as well as literature, poetry, dance and other performing arts. In theme-based learning, components of all these strands unite, not only for the artist-creator-performer but as well for those responding to works of art, becoming inspired and building their own creativity vicariously.
Creativity is not only problem solving but the expression of one's impressions. Two things are needed. First children need many impressions, experiences and examples of art in which to internalize. Second, they need experiences in all the art forms as well as Math, Engineering, Technology and Science. In this article we will look closely at the effects of integrating the arts into the STEM curriculum.

Five Points of Life Kids Marathon
Congratulations to our students and to coordinator, Coach Chelsea Jones for their participation in the annual Five Points of Life Kids Marathon last weekend!
Millhopper Montessori School won 3 of the 4 categories to recognize school participation! We were recognized for:
Top Percentage Middle School
Top Percentage Elementary School
Most Participants from Middle School
The goal of the Kids Marathon is to promote good health and physical fitness by giving kids the opportunity to run or walk an entire 26.2 miles, just like marathoners! Kids complete 25 miles, one at a time, during the months prior to the marathon, logging each mile on a log sheet.

National Geographic Geography Bee "GeoBee"
Our participants in Millhopper Montessori School's first National
Geographic Geography Bee "GeoBee" enjoyed a pizza lunch this week!
The Natio
nal Geographic GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world.
Students in grades four through eight from nearly 10,000 schools across the United States competed in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion.
Westin took first place, Stuart came in second and Sivan took third place.
Westin will advance to the next level of competition, a qualifying test to determine state competitors. Up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee. The winners of the State GeoBees receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C., next May to participate in the GeoBee national championship, competing for cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid Lindblad expedition to the Galápagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour ll. The National Geographic Society developed the National Geographic GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, 120 million students have participated in the GeoBee.

SCHOOL SHOE POLICY
Dear Parents,
Please remember to have your child wear athletic
style shoes or sneakers that fully enclose the foot to
school (no boots, Mary Janes, Mary Jane sneakers,
ballet shoes, deck shoes, mules, wedges, penny
loafers, sandals, dress shoes, crocs, flip flops...).
The shoe must tie or have Velcro so that the shoe
fits snugly on the foot.
Without appropriate shoes, the children will not
be able to go onto the west playground.
Thank you for your help in keeping the children safe.
Please let me know if you have any questions. If
you are not sure if your child's shoe meets the
school's policy, please see me.

Master Chef Junior
is searching for competitors in our area!
We are in search of children who LOVE to cook, ages 8 to 13 years old (as of April 1st, 2019,) who are excited to compete for a huge cash prize and the coveted title of MasterChef Junior!
