The road to UD-leader Theo Heyliger's potential downfall

PREMIUM ARTICLE - In this article, StMaartenNews.com recaps for its subscribers the whole sordid history dating back before 10-10-10 leading up the culmination with the arrest on Tuesday, February 19, 2019, of St. Maarten's most popular politician,

Dear Reader

The news that Saba electric company has gone 100% solar makes us wonder about our own situation in St. Maarten.

St. Maarten's own GEBE utility company needs to allow clients that generate excess electricity with their solar panels to pump this energy back into the grid. Free of charge!

This policy about GEBE being the only one legally allowed to generate electricity and needing to charge people for generating their own energy is an antiquated rule that our MPs needs to update.

There are enough people with solar panels that are generating excess energy that would like to feed the energy back into the GEBE grid free of charge.

Some may argue that 100% free of charge seems unreasonable seeing as GEBE needs to maintain the grid.

But surely there is a middle-ground to be found as to a level of pay-back for energy fed into the grid.

Especially if moving towards more sustainable use is a priority. Incentivizing the public to invest into "green" forms of energy and allowing the feeding-back into the grid as part of a recouping of said investment could actually - in the short term at least - take some pressure off the GEBE's capital investment needs.

With the summer coming up and the usual loadshedding to be expected, GEBE should be happy with the offer to get free electricity from solar panel owners.

Something to think about.

A question one asked was: "Energy Policy anyone?"

That there was a good question for our government.

In the meantime, happy readings and have a great week!
