Your Monthly Update
from the Community Development Partnership
A Word from Jay... This year’s CDP Annual Meeting will take place on Thursday, April 30 th at Wellfleet Preservation Hall. We will once again elect new Board Members and Officers, hear reports of our work over the past year, and recognize two community members with our annual awards. We would welcome your recommendations of potential honorees.

The Gwen Pelletier Award for Excellence in Community Service was created to honor former longtime CDP Executive Director, Gwen Pelletier for her years of service to the Lower Cape Community. It recognizes individuals, businesses, or organizations for their involvement and support for maintaining the economic diversity of the Lower Cape. Past award winners include Gwen Pelletier, housing advocate Paul Ruchinskas, Fishermen’s Alliance CEO John Pappalardo, and retired WE CAN Executive Director Andi Genser. You can find the full list of honorees on our website .

The Norm Edinberg Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurship was created to honor the late Norm Edinberg, a longtime CDP Board Member, for his years of service to the Lower Cape business community. The Award recognizes an established Lower Cape business owner who has utilized CDP’s business and credit services, and who has an established community connection through social responsibility, environmental sustainability, volunteer time, or financial contributions. Truro Vineyards, Karoo Restaurant, Cosmos Catering, and Farland Provisions are all past recipients.

Nominations from the community for both awards are most welcome. Nomination forms may be found on the CDP’s website by clicking here and are due by Friday, March 20th.

I hope you will “save the date” and join us on April 30 th for this annual celebration of the CDP’s work to create opportunities for people to live, work and thrive on the Lower Cape!

Housing
Jessica Georges: Deepening ties to the Lower Cape
“Owning my own home, I know now that if I ever want to go get another loan to expand my business I will have assets to use as collateral.”

Jessica Georges
Owner, Green Road Refill and Home Owner

The lack of year-round jobs paying a livable wage and housing that is affordable to year-round residents are consistently cited as two major barriers to a healthy Outer and Lower Cape Community. For nearly three decades, the CDP has worked to address both of these challenges. One Outer Cape resident who has used both the CDP’s housing and business services is Jessica Georges, the owner of Green Road Refill and a graduate of the CDP’s first-time home buyer education program.

Jessica first came to the Cape in the summer of 2003 as an actress and performed at the Cape Rep Theatre in Brewster. Although she had originally planned to be on Cape only for the summer, all that changed when she met Justin. They spent much of the summer together and she decided to move here full time! Justin and Jessica eventually got married.

Supporting Local Business
Jeannette de Beauvoir: It takes creative thinking to
 manage a business
“I am grateful beyond words to Pam and Ann and everything they are doing to help and inspire small businesses on the Cape.”

Jeannette de Beauvoir
Author, Provincetown

Well-known as the nation’s oldest arts colony, many painters, sculptors and writers flock to Provincetown during the summer to find inspiration in the town and the surrounding dunes and landscapes. A hardy gang of artists brave the cold of the off-season to make Provincetown their year-round home.

Author Jeannette de Beauvoir first started coming to Provincetown seasonally about 20 years ago, before making the move to live there year-round. “It was a place I really felt like I fit in,” she says.

Jeannette holds a deep passion for educating readers through her writing. “I’ve always wanted to teach, but I knew academia wasn’t for me,” she says. Jeannette’s educational background is in medieval history, and her early novels present historical events in a fun and easy to digest manner. Jeannette’s newest work is a mystery series set in Provincetown.

Supporter Spotlight
Supporter Spotlight: John Murphy, Jr.
Observations from behind the bar
“We have to support organizations like the CDP that advocate for solutions
in our communities, awareness is critically important.”

John Murphy, Jr.
CDP Advisory Council Member and Owner, Land Ho!

In early February the CDP hosted a gathering of supporters and their friends at the Land Ho!, a popular year-round pub and restaurant in downtown Orleans. The topic of conversation for the night was the work we do at the CDP to ensure a vibrant year-round community through housing and supporting small businesses. CDP Advisory Council member John Murphy, Jr. manages his family’s restaurant, and offered to host the event to help raise awareness about our work addressing economic development and the housing crisis on the Lower Cape. It is just one of the many ways he supports the CDP.

It is a big year for the Land Ho!. Fifty years ago, John’s father founded the restaurant which has since become an iconic Orleans landmark. After leaving the Cape for college, John went to work for a Boston tech consulting firm, returning to his birthplace in 2003. Since then, he has managed the family business and observed the changes to the Cape’s economy and housing supply.
