CAUGHT IN ENEMY CAMPS—COMMITTED TO A LIFE OF PEACE
Remembering Motoko Huthwaite, a member of our author community lost to COVID-19.
REMEMBERING MOTOKO—The opening sentences in the brief memoir she wrote for Friendship and Faith are as gripping as any lines we’ve ever published: “When the sirens went off again, we all went and sat in the air raid shelter expecting to die there. There was no stopping the atomic bombs if they hit.” As a result of living through World War II as a Japanese-American—living both in the U.S. and Japan during the war—Motoko developed a deep commitment to peacemaking that spanned the rest of her life.

SAMPLE CHAPTER FROM
WISDOM’S FRIENDSHIP & FAITH
MOTOKO F. HUTHWAITE
Views From the Enemy Camps
I lived in America when Pearl Harbor was attacked. So, in December 1941, I was perceived as the enemy in my hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
I lived in Japan when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima—so, then, I was perceived as the enemy in my family’s homeland, where my clothing, my language and even my particular style of wire-rimmed glasses made me stand out as the enemy—this time as one of the Americans who was dropping bombs.
I was an enemy in both of my countries...

How Should You Spend Your Time and Energy?
Musings of Dr. Jamie C. Hsu 10.11.2017
|
|
If you observe carefully, you will see that people spend their time and energy differently. As depicted in the chart, there are the “Ordinary People” who often spend time in the Yellow Concern Zone, the “Leaders” who spend their energy in the Red Influence Circle, and the “Gurus" who rise above the fray and stay in the Green Calm Land, unbothered by the chaos around them.
Of course, this is an oversimplification of how we spend our time and energy. We all move from one type to the other — sometimes we worry, sometimes we take charge, and sometimes we just don’t care. The key is to be aware of your mental state and try to manage it so your time and energy will be used most productively and beneficially...

With the help of his family members and other volunteers Swaroop started offering box lunches for anybody walking into the restaurant...
