College of Nursing students shined at the 30th USF Health Research Day held at the Marshall Student Center on Feb. 21. More than 340 poster presentations were on display representing research from the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health and Pharmacy.

Nursing student Dorothie Durosier Mertilus won for Best Poster in the Field of Nursing for her scholarly work titled "Sexual Distress in Lymphoma Patients: A State-of-the-Art Literature Review."

Film on Microbes Gets Thumbs-Up
"Let Them Eat Dirt: The Hunt for Our Kids' Missing Microbes" is a newly released documentary from Bullfrog Films looking at the role microbes play in the development, physical and mental health of children.

USF College of Nursing professor Maureen Groer, RN, PhD, offers one the film's featured reviews, writing that the "relationship between the microbiome and common pediatric illnesses is well explained and scientifically sound."

The film is based on the book "Let Them Eat Dirt" by B. Brett Finlay and Marie-Claire Arrieta.
Nursing Inventors Gather at Synapse Innovation Summit

Professor Chosen for Pediatric Nursing Conference Planning

USF College of Nursing assistant professor Sharlene Smith, DNP, MS, APRN, CPNP, has been selected to be on the conference planning committee for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP).

Dr. Smith is president of NAPNAP's Florida chapter, and the national conference will be held in Orlando in March 2021.
Professor Invited to Speak at Student Nurses Conference

USF College of Nursing assistant professor Yolanda Torres, PhD, RN, has been selected to present her research at the National Student Nurses' Association convention this April in Orlando.

Dr. Torres will also be honored and recognized as a member of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses during the conference's opening ceremonies.
Black Heritage Month Featured Health Expo and Panel Discussion
In February, the USF College of Nursing celebrated Black Heritage Month with two events.

On Feb. 6, a panel of male health care providers discussed the challenges of being in the health care field, and on Feb. 27, a health care expo showcased information from a diverse group.
Nursing Students Volunteer Tips on Health and Fitness
USF College of Nursing students led interactive lessons in nutrition and fitness to school-aged children during a Mini Teach-in at Sulphur Springs K-8 Community School on Feb. 20 as part a USF Health Service Corps volunteer opportunity.
Professor Accepts Research Award
USF College of Nursing assistant professor Paula Cairns, PhD, RN, accepted the Bronze Snapshot Award during the Society of Critical Care Medicine's 49th Critical Care Congress, Feb. 16-19 in Orlando.

Dr. Cairns received the research award based on her abstract titled, "SAF-T Intervention for PTSD in Family Caregivers of Critically Ill, Mechanically Ventilated Adults."
Health Education Workshops Help Wimauma Church Youth Group
Seven nursing students joined the USF College of Nursing faculty to hold two health education workshops for youth at Wholesome Church in Wimauma.

The workshops, held Feb. 19 and 26, focused on heart health and diabetes education.

The USF College of Nursing presented reference librarian Randy Polo with a certificate of appreciation during the Faculty Council meeting on Feb. 21.

Polo, who is retiring, was recognized for his years of dedication and service as the college's liaison at the Shimberg Health Sciences Library.
Running for Fun at Gasparilla
If you were one of the intrepid runners in the 2020 Gasparilla Distance Classic, you might have seen these three USF College of Nursing professors at the race start.

Congrats to Denise Maguire, Cheryl Zambroski, and Connie Visovsky for joining the thousands of landlubbers on race weekend. Drs. Maguire and Visovsky ran the 5K, and Dr. Zambroski completed the Lime Challenge, running a 15K, 5K, and a half marathon.
Interim Dean to Be Honored for Achievements in Health Equity

USF College of Nursing interim dean Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been selected to receive an achievement award during the Society of Behavioral Medicine's 41st Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions scheduled for April in San Francisco, California.

Among the Special Interest Group (SIG) Awards, Dr. Menon will receive the Health Equity SIG Service Award.
Nursing Professor Appointed to Serve on USF Library Council

USF College of Nursing assistant professor Christina Bricker, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, FAHA, has been appointed to the USF Library Council.

Dr. Bricker's three-year term runs 2020-2023. Council members advise the USF Provost on matters related to the composition, function, and structure of the USF Tampa Libraries and the Shimberg Health Sciences Library.

USF College of Nursing hosted Visiting Scholar Carla Rash, PhD, as part of an ongoing lectureship series.

Dr. Rash, an assistant professor at UConn Health, presented "Using Contingency Management Interventions to Motivate Behavior Change in Disadvantaged Populations" on Feb. 13.
Wearing Red for Heart Disease
Faculty and staff at the USF College of Nursing wore red on Feb. 7 for National Wear Red Day and to support the Go Red for Women campaign.

The annual event is focused on heart health and promotes awareness of cardiovascular disease, which is the No. 1 killer of women each year. The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement advocates for more research in women's heart health.
Annual Summit Unites Anesthetists
Members of the USF College of Nursing nurse anesthesia program attended the 7th annual Sand & Surf Anesthesia Symposium in Orlando, Feb. 7-9.

The conference, hosted by the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists, featured a weekend of workshops aimed at helping nurse anesthetists navigate the changing field, including tips on how to open an anesthesia practice.
Student Chosen for Anesthesia Mentorship
Student nurse anesthetist Sergiy Omelayenko is headed to the AANA Mid-Year Assembly on April 19 in Washington, D.C. where he will participate in the Student Mentoring Program.

USF College of Nursing CRNA program administrators recommended Omelayenko for the opportunity based on his leadership qualities and interest in nurse anesthesia advocacy. He plans to shadow an experienced CRNA during a day of presentations, open forums, and other events.
Nursing Advisor Accepts Merit Award
USF College of Nursing student advisor  Rebecca Gubernick was awarded a Certificate of Merit in the Excellence in Advising - Advisor, Primary role category for Region 4 of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA).

Gubernick accepted the award during NACADA's Southeast Region 4 conference in Tampa, March 1-3.
Leading Latinos in the Field of Nursing
USF College of Nursing assistant professor Ivonne Hernandez, PhD, RN, IBCLC, attended the National Association of Hispanic Nurses' (NAHN) Third Annual Latino Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C., Feb. 7-9.

Dr. Hernandez attended as president of the WestFL NAHN chapter. The event gives Latino nurses the opportunity to become engaged professionals and to take action to build their leadership skills.
