A Message from Florida Chamber Safety Council
Executive Director Jason Mozo, J.D.
|
|
Greetings!
As the Executive Director of the Florida Chamber Safety Council, I want to welcome you to the first issue of Strength in Numbers: The Florida EHS Briefing.
In 2020, the Florida Chamber Safety Council released its Florida Workplace Safety Data Report which compiled existing workplace safety, workers' compensation, mental health, physical health and environmental sustainability data for the State of Florida. As a result of this data-driven approach to identifying areas for attention and improvement in Florida, the Florida Chamber Safety Council began a movement along with its Advisory Board of visionary leaders from some of Florida's top companies to ensure Florida becomes a national model for safety, health and sustainability. A first and very important step begins with putting a premium on safety trainings.
Every day our team works to connect with Florida companies to provide safety solutions that match the needs of every business through our extensive training programs. Our suite of training solutions includes, but is not limited to, private trainings where our qualified Safety Specialists visit an organization to deliver in-person trainings to its employees, as well as conducting all the public trainings that we host across Florida. In addition, we offer online on-demand safety trainings that allows businesses as well as individuals, to set up safety trainings from the comfort of their computers.
Safety and Health lay as the foundational components in order to achieve Sustainability in all facets of life, business and personal. That is what our movement is all about. Establishing a strong Safety Culture is where it all begins. Not only is this a team effort, but true responsibility starts with you. To lead by example, setting the standards that are essential to assure that the most important factor is always met, to go home safely every day to our families and loved ones.
I hope this monthly briefing will become a key resource for your business and your team, so that you look to the Florida Chamber Safety Council as your partner in everything from safety trainings to mental health and wellness resources, data-driven reports and as a think tank focused on moving the needle in getting Florida closer to being the safest, healthiest, and most sustainable state in America! And always remember, Safety is No Accident!
If you have questions or want to connect to discuss how we can work together more closely to build a culture of safety, health and sustainability at your organization, please email me at jmozo@flchamber.com or call me directly at 850-585-1583.

President Katie Yeutter

Safety matters to Florida’s businesses and CEO’s, which is why the Florida Chamber Safety Council is working at the company and state level and uniting Florida’s business community for a movement to create a culture of safety as part of our mission to make Florida the safest, healthiest and most sustainable state in America. To achieve this goal, the Florida Chamber Safety Council has tapped into Florida’s leading companies and their safety leaders to create an Advisory Board that is an incubator of research, leadership and education, and provides resources, tools and best practices for small to mid-sized businesses that often do not have full-time safety, health and sustainability expertise on staff. Bringing the brain trust, tools and ideas of Florida’s leading companies to develop employee-driven programs that empower personal accountability for workplace safety and health, is paving the way for Florida to lead the nation in making a culture of safety, health and sustainability a priority and reality at every company across the state.

Latest CDC COVID Update
July 27, 2021
|
To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.
Wearing a mask is most important if you have a weakened immune system or if, because of your age or an underlying medical condition, you are at increased risk for severe disease, or if someone in your household has a weakened immune system, is at increased risk for severe disease, or is unvaccinated. If this applies to you or your household, you might choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission in your area.
You should continue to wear a mask where required by-laws, rules, regulations, or local guidance.

The Right Way to Use a Stressball
Do you know those squishy foam stress balls that you've picked up from time to time at conferences? The things that you squeeze a few times, don't make you feel any better, and then get thrown into a drawer to gather dust? Well, I have news for you: you've been using them wrong! A stress ball seems like something that shouldn't require an instruction manual, but using them properly actually requires pairing them with a behavioral technique, not just giving them a random squeeze.
Stress balls are meant to be used while engaging in a diaphragmatic breathing exercise - the type of breathing that sends a signal to your brain that you're relaxed, and everything is OK. To breathe through your diaphragm, try the following:
- Breathe in slowly through your nose, and imagine that you are inflating a balloon behind your belly button. Your belly should expand, and your chest and shoulders should not rise very much, if at all
- After your lungs are full, hold the breath for just a second
- Release the breath out through your mouth at a rate that feels comfortable to you
- Repeat these breaths several times - I'd recommend 10 breaths or more per sitting.
When done right, this is incredibly relaxing just on its own. However, if you are using a stress ball while you breathe, it feels marvelous! Grab that stress ball, squeeze tight during your in-breath, hold, and then release the ball as you release your breath.
Feels great, right? That's what they're actually for. Enjoy!
