FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Teaching and learning during this Pandemic has been a combination of frustration and shifting mindsets. The classroom that we all have known for the past Century is gone. The crisis has forced us to change the way we plan, deliver and assess classroom assessment. Our teachers (both online and hybrid) have been working to find effective ways to engage students in the learning as well as being mindful of their social and emotional challenges. We know that as the ground shifts beneath our feet, that we must try new methods to help our students learn and grow. In the building, social distancing has put an end to group projects and partner work that were central to many teacher's pedagogy. Online, our teachers are working to cultivate relationships and classroom routines with students they have never met in person.
We have learned that engaging students is more essential than ever. We know that last spring brought varying degrees of learning loss. Teachers are addressing those losses at the same time they are introducing new content and moving students forward. They are also keeping instruction coherent across online and in- person settings to make certain we are prepared to "pivot" at some point in the school year. We acknowledge that we have less instructional time this year. However, we are identifying the priority standards to make use of our time to benefit our students. Our teachers are creating flexible assignments, shifting due dates and even filming themselves teaching so students can complete and excel in different environments with varied levels of technology access and support.
We are working collaboratively to support our teachers as they learn to recognize trauma in children, weave in social-emotional skills into academic instruction and deepen our effectiveness and engagement of students when they are in person and remote. We are building learning communities in a much different way. We will continue to analyze our curriculum, shift our thinking about assessment and find new and effective ways to help our students succeed and thrive. This is our opportunity to get better as a profession, to acquire new knowledge and skills and to turn this negative crisis into a blessing for our students.

Black History Month Program Information
Project Idea Deadline November 17, 2020
February 17, 2021 will mark the third straight year that Delaware City Schools has partnered with the Delaware African American Heritage Council to celebrate Black History Month, culminating with a student showcase. Students of all cultural backgrounds have used art, dance, photography, poetry and the written word to express themselves with respect to the theme of the program.
This year's theme is "Soldiers on a Journey through Black History". Projects should focus on "soldiers" throughout black history who transformed the educational, political, scientific, technological, and social justice landscape. See FLYER.
Students should submit their project idea using this Google FORM by November 17th. The project does not need to be done at this time, just a commitment to an idea which can evolve. Individuals from DCS and DAAHC will support you along the way.
