With the Tokyo Olympics in full swing, athletic coaching is in the spotlight. The coaching these extraordinary athletes have received gives them agency to build skill, power, and fortitude. Now they take ownership of all they have built and put it to work as the coaches stand on the sideline. Every last athlete is a success story, medal or no.
With inclusive coaching in the academic space, we have the opportunity to guide students toward their potential just as Olympic coaches prepare athletes for their moment. Successful performance in college coursework or the modern workplace depends upon the initiative, autonomy and drive that coaching builds. As athletic coaches stand on the side when athletes step up to the challenge and beat the odds, so do inclusive coaches step back so their students lead their own personal charge. Every student who gains self-knowledge and self-management through coaching has the power to create their own success story and be the equivalent of an Olympic athlete in whatever career and life path they pursue.
