Southern Timber Markets & Prospects Report Released by NCSU SOFAC Team
North Carolina State University Southern Forest Resource Assessment Consortium (SOFAC), provided an overview of timber markets for the National Woodland Owners magazine. Overall, they project likely increases in saw timber prices, but the 2018 hurricanes have impacted timber supplies and then the opening of new mills may also affect prices. Read more here .

NC Cooperative Extension Generates 33:1 Return in Growth of the Economy According to New Impact Report
The NC Cooperative Extension Impact Report indicates that the state and counties are seeing a 33:1 return on their investment from Extension, with that impact calculated in terms of growth of the economy. This growth includes direct expansion of the economy as performance is increased in agriculture, forestry and value-added services in addition to other benefits and cost-savings. Collect Callery Pear Foliage Samples for New Study from Clemson & UT
Drs. Marcin Nowicki (UT) and Dave Coyle (Clemson) are collecting Callery Pear Leaf samples for a population genetics study. They need ten leaves from a sample location that consists of a patch of at least 10 individual Callery pears. Samples, with GPS locations, can be mailed to Dr. Nowicki, or they can send you envelopes. Read all of the details here.

Bradford Pear Listed as Invasive Species in SC
The South Carolina Forestry Commission has now added the Bradford/Callery pear to its list of Invasive Species, and recommends removing it from landscapes. Find the description of Bradford pear in SCFC's invasive species guide here.

I'veGot1- An App for Reporting Invasive Species Useful in the Field
Although this app has been out for a while, it's still a useful one to have on your phone, especially as the field season hits. You can even document that you don't see a particular invasive species, which is also good information. Check out more information about the app here, and download it for iOS or Android.

NC State Extension Introduces New Online Plant Database 
North Carolina State Extension has created an online plant database for public use. This online tool allows users to learn about specific plants and trees. The database allows someone to search for plants based on characteristics required for their site. The database is broken down by category of plant and then subcategories like height, shade tolerance, drought tolerance, phenotypical characteristics and even wildlife that the plant species can attract. Start using the plant database, or watch a short introduction video on how to navigate the database.

Longleaf StoryMap Provides Interactive look at the Longleaf Pine History
The Longleaf Alliance created three storymaps to tell the story of longleaf pine in the region. SREF built and manages their website and helped to add the maps to websites. These tools are useful when trying to give context and meaning to a great story. Check out all three storymaps here.

AR Rep. Bruce Westerman- Using Wood Products Saves Forests
Representative of Arkansas's fourth district, Bruce Westerman, and co-chairman of the house's special caucus on working forests advocates for strong forest markets as a way to retain forest lands. Westerman, who also holds an MS in forestry, further links strong markets to landowners' replanting of trees. Read this op-ed in the Hill here .



MSU and SAF Release Online Short Course- Physical Science of Forests, Climate Regulation and Carbon storage
This course, which will be open in April 2019, has been designed for natural resource professionals, Extension agents and landowners. The five module course includes sessions on carbon cycle, forest ecosystems and carbon, disturbances and carbon and more. NRCS GA State Office Seeks Partners to Improve State Conservation
The Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) Georgia (GA) State Office is seeking opportunities to partner with like-minded natural resource conservationists. They are seeking partners to help enhance the implementation of key conservation objectives and priorities. Proposals will be accepted from Georgia. NRCS anticipates that the amount available for support of this program in FY 2019 will be approximately $6,500,000. Proposals are requested from eligible entities, non-profits, governmental or non-governmental organizations, and institutions of higher learning for competitive consideration of awards. Projects are expected to be between one and five years in duration. Proposals are due April 18, 2019. The objectives, eligibility criteria, and application instructions can be found here.

NC Florence Restoration Fund Offers Aid to Affected Areas
The North Carolina (NC) Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) are approving and administering aid to woodland owners in 52 counties impacted by Hurricane Florence and recognized as federal disaster areas. The NC General Assembly approved $2.5 million in time-limited funding for reforestation efforts. To receive reimbursement, at least 4.5 acres of approved, completed work must be documented. The maximum funding allocation will be 100 acres per landowner per fiscal year. Applications need to be submitted to the landowner’s local NCFS office for initial review, before they are sent to the NCFS State Office for final approval. Applications will be funded on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funds have been allocated. Learn more.

MS Assistantship for Graduate Student with NCSU Extension Forestry
An assistantship for an MS student within the NCSU Forestry Extension program will start in fall 2019 and includes tuition, fees and a stipend for 12 months of the year. Georgia Forestry Commission Seeks to Fill Multiple Forester 1 Positions 
The Georgia Forestry Commission has multiple openings in several areas of South Georgia to fill the position of Forester 1. The positions are available in the following GA regions with potential residencies in: Southeast (Waycross, GA), Southwest (Albany, Camilla or Americus, GA), and middle East Coast (Stapleton, Waynesboro, GA) regions. UF SFRC: Asst Professor of Human Dimensions in Natural Resources
The University of Florida's (UF) School of Forest Resources and Conservation (SFRC) is seeking a qualified candidate to fill their Assistant Professor of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources position. This is a 9-month tenure-track appointment available in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (IFAS). This appointment will be 60% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences), 20% Extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) and 20% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station). MSU Forestry Extension: Tenure Track Assistant Professor Position, Biloxi, MS
Mississippi State University (MSU) is recruiting applicants for a new Extension Forester Assistant Professor position. The successful candidate will develop and teach educational programs to the appropriate clientele and county Extension Agents based on national, state, and county needs assessments. Duties will include the development of an Extension forestry and applied research program targeting forestry and forest management issues with an additional emphasis in a specialized area of expertise. Desired areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, forest management, economics, forest taxation, forest products, silviculture, ecology, and longleaf pine systems. The position will be located in Biloxi, MS.
