Pentecost: God Gives More than Enough

It is the "first day of the week" (John 20:19), the day of the new creation, but to those locked away in the upper room in fear, the world is as it always has been. So entrenched are they in the ways of grief and guilt that the Risen One in their midst needs to offer his life-giving invitation twice: "Peace be with you." The logic of the new age is peace, not retribution; forgiveness, not vengeance. With the invitation to new life comes also the means: the gift of the Holy Spirit, breathed upon them and within them. Just as the Father sent Jesus into the world, so now are these disciples sent as witnesses to God's saving work.

Pentecost is therefore the crowning achievement of the Jesus story. Now, more than ever, these huddled disciples would have just cause to sing the "Dayenu" ("It would have been enough") verses from the Passover seder meal, but revised: It would have been enough for the Word and wisdom of God to have been born in the flesh . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for the Word to grow to adulthood and share his stunning parables about God's gracious activity in the world . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to say to his enemies, "Father, forgive them" . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough for this Word to have died on a cross for us . . . Dayenu! It would have been enough that he rose again in blessing, not vengeance . . . Dayenu! But now, beyond what we would even expect-the Word becomes our word and it is written on our hearts at Pentecost . . . Dayenu! It is enough, and more than enough to enflame our ministry of reconciliation in a world in need of a healing word. [Sundays and seasons, 2020]

This Pentecost, we celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit . . . Dayenu! In our diversity, we are united through God's presence among us . . . Dayenu! We are amazed and astonished, united in Christ, and joined by common prayer. This Pentecost, the Advocate calls and sends us out in common mission anew. Come, Holy Spirit.

The Power of the Spirit is enough!

P.S. Please keep Bob and Ann Champagne in your prayers as he transitions to hospice care at Wolfeboro Bay Center.

Readings:
Acts 2:1-21 - Filled with the Spirit to tell God's deeds
Psalm 104:24-34, 35b - Send forth your Spirit and renew the face of the earth
1 Corinthians 12:3b-13 - Varieties of gifts from the same Spirit
John 20:19-23 - The Spirit poured out

Collect:
Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Saints at Play!

Dear Friends,

It seems like a year since we gathered last. As we continue to shelter, I'm sending prayers for your health and well-being. In God's time, we'll be back at All Saints with this pandemic behind us!

I found this Pentecost activity on line and thought it had some good ideas for our "stay at home" participation. I hope you'll find something relevant and enjoyable as we celebrate Pentecost from afar.

Stay well! Soon, friends, soon!
In Faith,
Nancy Thomas

Pentecost

At Pentecost we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is also the birthday of the Church. Here are a few ways you may want to celebrate.

The Gospel of Luke describes the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus as a dove. In Celtic Christian tradition the Holy Spirit is pictured as a wild goose. Find some time to look at the birds around you. (This is a great app for identifying the birds: BIRDS

Why do you think the Holy Spirit is so often identified with a bird?

Two other images closely associated with the Holy Spirit are wind and fire. (Acts 2:1-3)
1)      Play with the wind by creating a pinwheel : PINWHEEL
or a kite: KITE

How do you know when the wind of the Holy Spirit is blowing through your life?

2)       The Holy Spirit descends on the disciples like fire and they are changed by that experience.  Light a candle and name times when God has changed you.

One of the gifts the Holy Spirit gives the disciples is the ability to communicate in many languages. Besides the language you speak, there are many kinds of language. If you are a fan of Harry Potter you will know the language of Quidditch and Muggles, your passion for gardening may introduce you to the mysteries of soil and compost, or maybe you are all about French knots or slip stitches.
Take some time to learn about the language of someone else's passion. Learn their language.
Or
Have some fun learning how to say "Hello" in another language: HELLO

Wear red and throw a birthday party for the Church, share a picture of the cake!

Good News: Easing pain in a dark time
In the midst of the distress and deprivation that invades much of daily life near and far, All Saints Mission Outreach Team met via Zoom and recommended outreach grants to relief agencies that meet MOT goals and have a splendid track record of putting money to work immediately and for maximum impact.

All Saints Vestry approved the five grants we recommended, increasing our assistance in the light of the current pandemic.

Recipients include Cristosal, now at work in all three Northern Triangle Countries - El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Cristosal's legal and humanitarian work for families threatened by gang violence has resulted in a significant drop in those seeking to leave their country and emigrate to the U.S. COVID has increased the challenges for Cristosal, causing rising hunger in the three countries: deportations from the U.S. are further spreading the virus.

Doctors Without Borders, another recipient, is on the ground in the most dangerous, needy places all over the world, including Yemen, Syria, and Lesbos. For the first time ever, the organization has dispatched teams within the United States to minister to desperate American Indian tribes in the Southwest.

P. O. Box 21 , a Sandwich-based nonprofit that provides scholarship aid and tutoring to local asylum seekers, also received an MOT grant. (Asylum seekers are not allowed to work while awaiting their hearing date.)

Episcopal Relief & Development , our church's arm for disaster and other emergency relief, will use our grant to partner with agencies on the ground in the most afflicted countries.

Our fifth grant will continue support for the ministry of Rachel and Vitaly Dyachenko who work with vulnerable children at a school in Moldova through Word Made Flesh. (Rachel is the daughter of Holly and Ralph Simons. She and Vitaly and their children worship with us at All Saints when they are home on a visit.)

In other MOT actions, we continue to support Mercy, our EFAC (Education For All Children) student who graduated at the top of her class and now has begun four years of college. And we continue to honor our three-year pledge to Hope House, the family shelter on Lehner Street.

Going forward, we will have exhausted our substantial (tithe) contribution from the church construction and improvement project and our expected resources are likely to be somewhat less. But our work will continue at whatever pace is possible. We salute our fellow parishioners whose generosity empowers the mission outreach we do in your name.

Let us rejoice in this Good News on the eve of Pentecost!

A Shared Prayer for Common Mission in Times Like These

As we approach the twentieth anniversary of our full communion agreement, " Called to Common Mission , " we give thanks to God for the partnership shared between The Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America . In the coming months, we will pray for and with one another, seeking spiritual renewal in these challenging times, and revival for the common mission we share.

From Pentecost Sunday through the first Sunday in September, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and his Lutheran counterpart Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton welcome congregations and individuals to regularly pray "A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit Among the People of God." This prayer - crafted by a team of Episcopal and Lutheran prayer leaders in light of the COVID-19 pandemic - will connect us in common prayer and revive us for common mission, wherever and however we may be gathered. At All Saints' we will pray it at the end of worship.

A Prayer for the Power of the Spirit among the People of God
God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ's body in the world: a people who pray, worship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A Day of Mourning and Lament

After 100,000 COVID-19 Deaths in U.S., Interfaith Leaders, Mayors Call for Day of Mourning and Lament

[May 27, 2020] As we mark the death of 100,000 people in the U.S. from COVID-19, an unprecedented group of 100+ national faith leaders-from Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions representing major denominations, national faith-based organizations, local congregations, and millions of people of faith across the country-call for a National Day of Mourning and Lament. Together, they look to federal, state, and local elected officials to observe Monday, June 1 as National Day of Mourning and Lament, a day marked by moments of silence, lowering of flags, interfaith vigils, ringing of bells, and civic memorials.

This call is being supported by the U.S. Conference of Mayors who represent over 1,400 mayors across the country. Mayors lead on the frontline of the COVID-19 response effort and continue to model critical local leadership amid this difficult time.

Together, interfaith leaders and mayors across the nation will call us to mourn, lament, and honor the dead, acknowledge the unequal nature of our suffering, pray together for the healing of the nation, and recommit to the difficult work ahead.

"I encourage Episcopalians to join with other people of faith this weekend to grieve and honor those who have died from COVID-19," said Michael B. Curry, presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church. "Let this tragic moment not pass without us honoring the many among us who have lost their lives or lost their loved ones and commending them and ourselves to God's love and peace."

The National Day of Mourning and Lament will follow a weekend of diverse services--Friday Muslim, Saturday Jewish, and Sunday Christian (including Protestant, Catholic, Evangelical, African American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American) all united in times of lament and mourning for the dead. The vocation of remembering will unite across lines of religion and traditions and transcend our politics.

Bishop Rob will hold a simple service for Monday with details posted here over the weekend:  Monday Service

Marriage of Carole Stabile and Phil Gambale

Pastor Bill presided at the marriage of our Dinner Bell Chef Phil and long-time Senior Center and Dinner Bell volunteer Carole Stabile on Saturday, May 23, 2020.

O God, you have so consecrated the covenant of marriage that in it is represented the spiritual unity between Christ and his Church: Send therefore your blessing upon these your servants, that they may so love, honor, and cherish each other in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that their home may be a haven of blessing and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Linda Brown to Complete EfM (Education for Ministry) Program

Eucharistic Minister Linda Brown has recently complete d the four-year EfM this spring. There had been a final in-person seminar session planned for Saturday, June 6th, but they will finish with one last online Zoom seminar. Congratulations Linda!

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice. Since its founding in 1975, this international program has assisted more than 100,000 participants in discovering and nurturing their call to Christian service. EfM helps the faithful encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into conversation with their experiences of the world as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together.

A Walk Around the All Saints' Campus...

Sunshine illuminating the playground and generating electricity on our solar array.

The lilacs at All Saints' smell as sweet as they look.

Four trees were recently removed including three dead trees near the parking lot and the tree in the corner of the Memorial Garden that was doing poorly and too close to the building.

Connect With God & With Others
"...have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God." -Alice Walker

The church is where God's people-YOU-are. While we are in exile in our homes, we don't need to go to church to find God, because when we are church together on-line we share God. There are many ways to connect, to see, hear and share God online at All Saints'...

Not sure how to connect via Zoom?
During this time of disconnect due to Covid-19, All Saints' is utilizing Zoom for many gatherings.
From Sunday Virtual Coffee Hour, to Bible Studies, Zoom will allow our congregation to connect live and face-to-face, while following the social guidelines set in place by our government. Here are the steps for participating via computer or telephone:

  1. You will find a link to the event and an I.D. number and password. (Note: The FIRST time you open a Zoom link, it will prompt you to download the app. This is FREE. Please follow the instructions given to install.)
  2. Each Zoom event that you open will ask for the I.D. number and password.
  3. For any video/visual participation, you will need a camera either on your phone, or on your computer. If you do not have one, the invitation email you receive will provide instructions for calling in on your phone.
  4. We encourage participants to mute yourself unless you have an opportunity to speak. Household noises can often times be a distraction to others. If you would like to get your Zoom account set up ahead of time, visit https://zoom.us/.

Troubleshooting:
  1. If you log in and no one else is in the gathering, double check to make sure you have the right date and time; if you do, it's likely that you've clicked/entered the wrong link/address. Each meeting has its own link/address and only works for that gathering. Note: some gatherings use a "wait room" and the host will let you in.
  2. If you get connected but can't seem to connect audio, try using "chat" (link at the bottom of the screen) to ask for help.
  3. If you can only see one person, try clicking on the "speaker view" button on the top and switch it to "gallery view" to see all participants.
  4. If your internet connection fails and you get knocked off, simply join back in. It happens.
  5. If you're stuck, contact the event host/leader.

Thank You for Giving During This Time of Pandemic

Thank you for all who have continued to support the work of All Saints during this time. You may make contributions by mail, using your financial institution's automated check writing service, or secure online giving via  Donate

Creator of all we enjoy, we give you thanks for the countless people you have gathered to do your work as All Saints' Wolfeboro. We thank you for your Holy Spirit inspiring some as they longed for this church, others as they built this church and still others as they lovingly and boldly led this church through times of abundance and times of scarcity. Help us to be bold as we model giving of time and money during this time. Make our generous giving a symbol of both our faith and our gratitude. We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
You Make A Difference

Is there an exceptional All Saints' volunteer we should recognize? Please share any recognition recommendations with our Senior Warden Carolyn Sundquist or Pastor Bill to bring to the Vestry for consideration. Who can we give thanks for the blessings they have shared with our congregation?
