Miami's Got Talent
Young Talent Big Dreams is back!

A collaborative initiative of The Children's Trust and Actors' Playhouse, Young Talent Big Dreams (YTBD) was created to inspire kids ages 8-17 to showcase their unique gifts and vie for a chance to win life-changing prizes like performing arts scholarships, masterclasses and performance opportunities at public events. Other draws for competitors - aside from a supportive environment and the guidance and feedback of YTBD's kindly compassionate and considerate mentors and judges - are monetary prizes, tickets to must-see local attractions and theatre performances, and a trip to attend the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles.

Girl Power!
Inspire your daughters - and sons

Claressa Shields Born Flint, Michigan, 1995
Growing up with an imprisoned father and an alcoholic mother, Claressa Shields and her siblings had to fend for themselves, often going hungry and sleeping on the floor. So when 9-year-old Claressa told her dad she wanted to take boxing lessons, she didn't back down a bit when he laughed and said she was too pretty for that. Instead, she angrily retorted, "I don't want to be a model - I want to be an athlete." He gave in, and eight years later Claressa became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. Four years later she took home another gold, making her the only American boxer - male or female - with two.

Keep Kids Safe at Home
Avoiding accidents and injuries
By Elisa Chemayne Agostinho

According to the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of Miami (www.injuryfree.org), unintentional injuries are the number one cause of death for children ages 1-12 in Miami-Dade County, many of which can occur in the home. The good news? These types of injuries can often be prevented with a bit of thought and preparation.

Falls
While it's inevitable that your kids will take an occasional spill, there are things you can do to minimize the risk of serious tumbles. Install approved safety gates, guard rails and window guards where needed, and securely anchor TVs and furniture to walls using the appropriate hardware to prevent tip-overs. Infants and toddlers should always be strapped in when in high chairs, carriers, swings and strollers; carriers should be placed on the floor - not on a counter, table or other furniture - before putting baby inside.
