January 30th, 2020 will mark the 5th consecutive year that the SOUPer Bowl has been held at Nease High School. The event, which runs from 6-8 pm, will be graced by over twenty of the finest chefs on the First Coast that will prepare soups for everyone to taste. There are many amazing restaurants that will be in attendance this year, such as Ice Plant, Congaree and Penn, Treylor Park, Palm Valley Outdoors, and so many more! The tickets are $25 and each guest also has the opportunity to choose a ceramic bowl to take home that was hand-crafted by a student. The SOUPer Bowl is held in order to raise awareness of the student hunger problem facing St. Johns County and it is fully run by student volunteers.
This event began in 2015 and has raised over $100,000 in only four years! This year our goal is to raise $40,000 in order to help the 9,000 or more students that depend on the free and reduced lunches that their school provides. The SOUPer Bowl is partnering with Hugs Across the County, which is a non-profit organization that works to identify students’ needs and provide them with assistance in any way possible. Even if you are unable to attend the event, you can visit
https://www.studentstacklehunger.org to purchase a ticket to the event as a way to show your support. Help us as we partner with Hugs Across the County to aid students in desperate need!

From the District Curriculum Office
Each year, we are asked by the Bureau of Standards and Instructional Support to identify a junior as the
District Sunshine State Scholar (SSS)
and provide the name of the student to their office. The SSS should be a student who is planning to pursue a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related field and who meets the following minimum criteria:
· The student has achieved junior class status and has an interest in pursuing postsecondary education opportunities in Florida.
· The student has expressed or demonstrated an interest in STEM-related studies.
· The student has a weighted grade point average of 3.9 or higher.
· Based upon information available at this point in time, the student should be on track to qualify for the Florida Academic Scholars Award according to the current guidelines established for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.
Districts are encouraged to add criteria to the list to assist in choosing the District Sunshine State Scholar and the District Alternate. In St. Johns County School District (SJCSD), each high school chose a student to represent their school. Students were asked to respond to the following
“You have received a grant to create and design a STEM elective for your high school. The grant provides all the equipment needed for the course. Enrollment for the course must be at least 22 students. In
no more than one page,
describe what course you would create, why that particular course and how you would advertise the benefits of the course to get the necessary enrollment.”
We also had a 15 minute interview with all of the nominees and discussed how they became interested in STEM, how STEM fits into their future plans and how they would influence others to pursue STEM courses. The interviews were enlightening and have become a favorite part of the process. We are in awe of our students, they are amazing.
Due to the growth in our county, this year we are permitted to submit the names of two students to participate in the Sunshine State Scholar event.
It is a pleasure to announce that Sophia Brecko from SAHS and Alan Michael from NHS have been selected as the 2019 – 2020 SJCSD Sunshine State Scholars.
Henry Stophel from BTHS has been selected the 2019 – 2020 SJCSD Sunshine State Scholar Alternate. The representatives from the other schools are Elyse Soracco from CHS, Samuel Steen from PMHS, and Abigail Paris from PVHS.

Academy Summer Internship Process Starts January 30th
Each year, Communications, Hospitality and Engineering Academy students who are moving from their Junior to Senior year are presented with a unique opportunity: to take part in a professional summer internship. There is an informational session on the Academy summer internship program coming up on Thursday, January 30th, in the Media Center Classroom (located behind the Media Center desk), during all three lunches.
These internships are through local businesses. Some are paid, while others allow students to earn service hours. Most internships are 3-6 weeks long, with students earning a maximum of 120 service hours. Students who take part in summer internships have the chance to use the skills they've learned in class to be an integral part of a professional environment. All current Academy juniors are invited to attend the information session on January 30th, during all three lunches, in the Media Center classroom. The summer internship packet is available from all Academy teachers. The application is due no later than February 13th.
Remaining in an Academy for 2020-2021
All Communications, Hospitality and Engineering Academy students have participated in the Intent to Return process in their Academy class before winter break. This process lets us know if a student would like to continue on to the next-level Academy course for the 2020-2021 school year, or if they would like to be released from the Academy after this school year. To complete the Intent to Return process, students simply checked “Yes” (they do want to continue on in the Academy program), or “No” (they would like to be released from the Academy program next school year to pursue other courses), and then signed their name. Academy instructors provided the Intent to Return paperwork during class. If an Academy student decided they do not want to continue on in the program for the 2020-2021 school year, and checked “No,” Mrs. Combs will send them an Academy drop form, which must be filled out, signed by the student and the parent, and returned to Mrs. Combs by dropping it off at the front desk. Those Academy drop forms will be distributed in January. If a student initially checked “Yes,” indicating they would like to return to the program, but then changes his/her mind, the student can email Mrs. Combs for a copy of the Academy drop form.
If you have any questions about the Intent to Return process, you can email Mrs. Combs at

Course Registration for the 2020-2021 School Year:
Course registration for the 2020-2021 school year started on Monday, January 13
th
. School Counselors will be in classrooms every day between now and spring break in order to meet with each student one-on-one regarding their individual selections. All of the information regarding scheduling (our schedule to meet with students, the PowerPoint presentation from the parent night, course progressions, the elective video, and course catalog) are available on our website. If parents have specific questions, it is recommended that they write them on their student’s course registration form so that the School Counselors can address those concerns during their individual meeting. Students will receive their recommendation form a few days before their scheduled visit and will need to have spoken with their parents regarding their selections, considered which electives and scheduling options they want, and obtained a parent signature on their recommendation form prior to attending their appointment. For more details, please see the “Checklist for the Course Registration Process” on-line.
This week we will be meeting with the following English classes: 9
th
graders who do not have an English class or missed their scheduled time.
Parents:
Do you work for a company that hires high school graduates? Would you like an opportunity to recruit Nease High School seniors? We are hosting a technical college and career fair on April 1
st
to show students opportunities outside of a traditional 4 year degree. If you are interested in participating in this event, please reach out to Mrs. Smith at
[email protected]
.
Dual Enrollment:
PERT testing is offered at St. Johns River State. Students must contact SJR’s testing department to schedule an appointment. Test scores for Dual Enrollment must be complete by April 1
st
.
Seniors:
College Board is giving away scholarships for completing the steps for applying to college and financial aid. Click on the links below for more information.
Seniors can earn money from CollegeBoard for the following
:
- Complete the FAFSA: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should complete the FAFSA® form to apply for financial aid. They must provide a screenshot of their FAFSA confirmation email if selected for the scholarship (undocumented and international students are exempt).
In order to apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a student AND a parent must first create an FSA ID. Students and parents can do that online here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/fsaid
.
This is something that can be completed in Counselor Corner. Parents who have older students may have already completed this process previously. Once students and parents have their FSA ID, they can complete the FAFSA on-line here:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa
.
- Apply to Colleges: $1,000
- Now Open for Seniors Through February
- Students should apply to at least two colleges they want to attend and submit the names of the colleges to earn an entry for the scholarship. Students may earn one additional entry for every additional college application after their first two, up to a maximum of six total applications.
In addition to the College Board Scholarships, seniors that have not applied to Bright Futures should make sure to complete their application before the holiday break. Students who meet the criteria and who have applied for the scholarship prior to the end of the first semester can lock in the scholarship in January.
In order to apply for State Scholarship & Grant Programs (Bright Futures), a student must first
Create a Student Account/Profile
at the following link:
http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/
. Click on State Grants, Scholarships & Applications. Click on
Create a Student Account.
Students will receive an email with their User ID and temporary password. After creating a
Profile
, students will have the option to continue directly to the FFAA.
The application typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete, so students are welcome to come to Counselor Corner and complete the application with their School Counselor or do it on their own from home. Students DO NOT need to have met the requirements prior to applying for the scholarship. While we encourage students to meet the requirements for the scholarship as soon as possible, students have until the June SAT/ACT test dates to continue to try and earn the required test scores. As a reminder, students need qualifying GPA, SAT or ACT, and Community Service Hours in order to earn the scholarship. Any student that meets those requirements and applies will earn the scholarship.
Please make sure you are checking the e-mail address that you provided to your Naviance account as we will start sending larger senior specific updates through Naviance. Returning students should have received their Naviance registration code last spring in order to set up their accounts. If you need that information again, you can get it from your School Counselor. Once you have registered, you can continue to access your account here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
The majority of students should have submitted their college applications at this time. As we enter notification season, please update your School Counselor and Naviance as you get news of your acceptances!
Juniors:
School Counselors visited Junior English classes before Thanksgiving. We worked with students to confirm that they are aware of all the classes that they need to graduate. We also worked on developing their college lists of potential schools and careers. Students received their Naviance codes so that they can log into their Naviance accounts here:
https://student.naviance.com/allennease
and start saving potential colleges and careers to their “Colleges I’m Thinking About” and “Careers I’m Thinking About” sections. Students are encouraged to start working on their resumes in Naviance as these will be required for their college letters of recommendation next year. Please ask your student to review the packet that they received. It includes their remaining credits for graduation, SAT/ACT test dates, Bright Futures information, and their checklist for college/career planning.
It is also time for Juniors to start taking the SAT and ACT. Your goal is to have a solid test score by the end of the school year so that you can start submitting college applications in the summer and fall of next year. You can register for the SAT at
www.collegeboard.org
and the ACT at
www.actstudent.org
. Students on free and reduced lunch can see Ms. Harden in guidance for 2 fee waivers for each test.
Freshman:
All Freshman received their course recommendations for the 2020-2021 school year on January 9
th
. School Counselors will be meeting with these students individually to select their courses for next year between January 13
th
and January 24
th
. Please see the website for more specific times and information.

Please use this email as an opportunity to make sure these are the textbooks your student has in his/her possession as they will be due back at the end of the school year. If your student has any fines on his/her account, PLEASE take care of these as soon as possible, ESPECIALLY SENIORS! Juniors and Seniors with any fines on their account will

Greetings from the University of North Florida!
My name is Dr. Tara Rowe and I serve as the director of the THRIVE program located in the Disability Resource Center here at UNF. I’d like to take a moment to share with you an exciting event we will be hosting on
Tuesday February 25th for potential parents, caregivers, and educators of students with disabilities transitioning from high school to college with a standard diploma.
As the enrollment of students with disabilities in higher education continues to rise, universities across the country have been continually working to provide accommodations supporting degree-seeking individuals. At the University of North Florida, students with disabilities are offered accommodations and programs to ensure their success on their degree pathway, as well as preparing them for professional life beyond college.
We are inviting potential parents, caregivers, and educators of students with disabilities to come to UNF to learn about admissions, accommodations, financial aid, and much more. Speakers will be able to answer any questions guests may have about how their child can be supported throughout their academic career at UNF.
If you know any parents or guardians of students with disabilities at your school you believe would benefit from such an information session, please share the Eventbrite link provided below, which will allow them to RSVP to attend the information session.
Please note that each individual seeking to attend must register for themselves; this means that if two parents of one child are attending, each parent must register independently of one another. This will allow us to get an accurate count of how many to be expecting.
Thank you for sharing, we look forward to seeing you all on February 25
th!
Dr. Tara Rowe
