KBA AT THE CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW
When I was asked to take part in a group who would represent the voice of broadcasters at the world's technology table, I jumped at the chance. Little did I know that meant attending the largest convention on the face of the Earth, the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held this week in Las Vegas.

I cannot begin to describe for you the enormity of this convention. For those of you who have attended the NAB Show, let me put this into perspective. All of the 2.9 million square feet within the Las Vegas Convention Center was filled. The parking lot was busting at the seams with newly erected, multi-story vendor buildings, static displays and virtual experiences. The Aria and Venetian hotels acted as spill over facilities for training sessions, meetings and demonstrations.

To say that I wasn't prepared for the overload of technology is a gross understatement. Anything and everything that you can possibly imagine was on display as a prototype. Autonomous vehicles, security robots, artificial Intelligence, 5G connectivity, 18k displays, virtual fish tanks, refrigerators that order groceries and so much more.

One example of a recent broadcast related advancement, is the growing ecosystem of users with smart speakers and interactive televisions. These devices are here to stay. Not because of their ultra thin displays and voice activated controls, but because consumers (our listeners and viewers) are demanding them at an alarming rate.

There is no doubt that we are still very much in the content creation and delivery business. And as the owner of a small radio station, I still firmly believe that over-the-air broadcasting remains the life blood of our industry. However, as these electronic gadgets evolve, so do new opportunities. The development of 5G alone will someday allow broadcasters to deliver their content to places that were thought to be unreachable, with digital displays that were thought to be impossible and at rates faster than imagined.

My goal with this CES sharing exercise was not to cause panic or force you outside of your personal comfort zone. Instead, my hope is to inspire awareness of new technologies that will allow us to connect with our consumers in nontraditional ways, on devices that they are already using.
