Dear VOS members,
It is with great honor and humility that I assume the presidency of your VOS. My special thanks to Janet Van Dyke, who did a terrific job as your president for the past year. She and your Board of Directors worked very hard to celebrate the retirement of Maralyn Probst as our Executive Secretary for the past 18 years and to assemble a memorable scientific and social program - she succeeded!
Janet, Maralyn and your Board of Directors also paved the way to transition Heidi DeCamp into her role as our new Executive Secretary and the NCSU Continuing Education team as our new meeting planner. I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with this new team to continue to serve the VOS family and make it as strong as ever.

Janet Van Dyke (left) and Ross Palmer present Jacques Jenny Lecturer Dr. Martha Murray with a plaque of appreciation.
|
There were multiple themes throughout the 2020 Conference in Sun Valley that we will strive to retain in the coming year. We celebrated the contributions of women to our proud profession; past, present and future. We celebrated the role of the VOS in launching so many outstanding careers by giving students, interns and residents their first opportunity to present their research before a professional audience. This year our young investigators/presenters did themselves and our VOS traditions proud. Not sure how exactly, but I still recall being in their shoes exactly 33 years ago also in Sun Valley. Standing before the likes of Drs. Wade Brinker, Gretchen Flo, Don Piermattei and others was no small step for me. In 2020, we also celebrated teamwork and our Jacques Jenny lecturer, Martha Murray MD, exemplified the power of teamwork as well as anybody I can remember. Cady Coleman, our neighborly astronaut, shared the importance of teamwork in service of any mission. What a great set of messages for us to carry into 2021!
As we begin our preparations for Big Sky in 2021, I want you to be on the lookout for our new meeting registration and housing portal on the VOS website (www.vosdvm.org). Booking your housing through this portal will be EASIER and more IMPORTANT than ever! In contrast to previous years, all commissions from our lodging block will be returned to your VOS so that we can keep meeting costs down and the value of membership up. In short, by using the VOS website portal for your VOS 2021 housing, you will be strengthening YOUR organization.
Please know that the VOS is YOUR organization, and it is my privilege to be given the opportunity to give back to the same organization that has been advancing the field of veterinary orthopedics, disseminating information between private and academic veterinarians, and helping young investigators launch their careers since its very first meeting held in Snowmass, Colorado in 1974 (nope, I wasn't there for that one!).
VOS 2020 attendees will be receiving the
post-conference survey next week.
Please take the time to fill out the survey so we can make your VOS as strong as ever! When you speak, we listen.
Mark your calendars now to attend VOS 2021: March 13-20, 2021, in gorgeous Big Sky, Montana!

It Has Been an Honor to Represent VOS This Year!
Dear VOS members,
It has been such an honor to represent VOS this year and to preside over our annual conference in Sun Valley earlier this month. It was a fantastic event from our "kick-off" Super Bowl Party to our Awards Banquet. We had 258 registered attendees representing 10 countries
. I overheard many attendees say that the scientific program put together by
José García-López and
Caleb Hudson was the best they had ever seen. Our Jacques Jenny Lecturer,
Dr. Martha Murray, was phenomenal ... and again, many said that she was the best Jacques Jenny presenter they had ever heard.
|
|
|
From left: Janet Van Dyke, NASA astronaut Cady Coleman, and Maralyn Probst pause for a photo.
|
Our Foundation Night was a huge success with attendees having the opportunity to meet with the authors of each poster to discuss their findings. Our silent auction raised the most money of any auction to date. Our Kids' Party was a huge hit with pizza, crafts, bowling, and a surprise visit by NASA astronaut
Cady Coleman. Cady then dazzled our SRO audience with her presentation on her experiences as the lead scientist and lead robotics officer aboard the International Space Station. Her emphasis upon encouraging young women to pursue careers in STEM-based fields and the need for collaboration and teamwork in any working environment rang home with the audience. She then posed for photographs with many of the attendees.
Thursday night brought our Awards Banquet that doubled as the official Retirement Party for
Maralyn Probst after 18 years as our executive secretary. Maralyn was surprised to see her son,
Caleb Probst, appear on stage as our MC/comedian for the night. Caleb had the crowd in tears laughing. Maralyn then spoke to all, expressing her thanks for all of the great memories, and reminding us all that we are a service organization ... and that "just good enough is not good enough!" We then welcomed
Heidi DeCamp as our new Executive Secretary. Everyone who has attended VOS in the past decade will recognize Heidi as Maralyn's skilled assistant. We are thrilled that she has agreed to step into this important role.
Finally, it was my pleasure to hand over the official President's Bell to
Ross Palmer!
Janet Van Dyke Past President
