Sunday Readings and Music

The Readings for this Sunday
In this Hebrew Bible story Moses is encountered by the Lord in the burning bush. He is called to his mission to lead the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, and he asks to know the name of this God of his ancestors. God’s answer to Moses is intriguing and mysterious. The response may indicate a proper name which traditionally has been known as Yahweh. God’s answer may, however, suggest a meaning like “The One who causes to be,” or “I am who I am,” or “I will be what I will be.”
The psalmist seeks the Lord in whose presence there is sufficiency and contentment.
In this reading Paul looks back to the great events of the exodus story and sees lessons for contemporary Christians. Some disciples apparently believed that participation in baptism and the Eucharist would automatically prevent sin and excuse them from judgment. Paul suggests that the passing of the Israelites through the sea and the food and water they received in the wilderness can be understood as types of the Christian sacraments. Yet the Israelites still committed sin and fell into condemnation.
In our gospel Jesus uses two contemporary disasters and a parable of his own to stress the need for repentance. Some might think that those who died in these tragedies were more sinful than others. Not necessarily so. Unless people use the time allotted for a change of heart and turning to God, they too will come to a tragic end.

Collect for Sunday
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving for a New Bishop (EDSD via Facebook)
Holy Almighty God, from age to age you call forth and anoint shepherds to tend your flock. We celebrate your calling forth our new bishop, the Rev. Canon Susan Brown Snook, to lead us forward in faith. As we joyfully welcome her as bishop, pour forth the gifts from your Holy Spirit to strengthen her for ministry. Through her faithful response to your call, may she come to know the vibrant faith, love, and support of the people of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.
And we give thanks for the ministry and faith of the Rev. Roy Hoffman, DMin, and the Rev. Michael Tinnon, DMin, who offered themselves, their lives and ministries, in discernment for bishop. Continue to pour into them a lively sense of your presence, filling them with your holy spirit, and blessing the fruits of their prayers and the work they do for your people and our Church. We offer these prayers through Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek you [God] here may find you, and be filled with your joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
