Last week Mayor Dave Ryan joined with the City of Pickering Mayor's Gala Committee, event sponsors Mattamy Homes and OPG as well as staff of the Ajax Pickering Hospital to celebrate the new patient monitors that have been installed in the NICU thanks to the success of the 2017 and 2018 events.

"The new monitoring system is a crucial tool for our staff," said Julie Goldstein Director, Women's and Children's & Patient Flow at Ajax Pickering Hospital. "It provides, in real time, even more vital statistics about our patients, whether the data is being viewed on a screen from inside
the patient's room or, once networked, from multiple locations, both inside and outside the hospital as well as including hand-held devices."

Since each monitor can easily be transported while still transmitting information about the patient, it can accompany the baby or child as they leave the unit for various tests in another area of Ajax Pickering Hospital or even transferred to another medical facility. This mobility ensures that the patient's vitals are continually followed by either our own paediatric staff or those awaiting the arrival of the patient at the other hospital.

In the future, with the continued expansion of connectivity through the hospital, medical staff from across all of Lakeridge Health sites as well as those based at the Hospital for Sick Children will be able to access the real time data and provide immediate feedback about a patient's condition or treatment rather than the patient and staff having to wait for an in-person consultation that might involve arranging travel or other associated delays.

Since the inaugural event held in 2005, the City of Pickering Mayor's Gala has raised over $1 million for the Ajax Pickering Hospital. These funds have been used throughout the hospital, from the paediatric unit to the operating room, diagnostic imaging to complex continuing care.
