Pastor's Message

By now most everyone is aware that First Congregational Church will celebrate 300 years in 2020. This tercentennial birthday has been the inspiration for our Vision 2020 work that is leading to all the construction that will soon begin on this historic church structure.

To prepare for this important event, several of us have been digging around in the church vault lately. Did you even know that there is a vault in the church? It is not quite like a bank vault, but rather a locked closet in the basement of the activities building that is lined with metal walls to protect historical documents from fire. The building we worship in today is the third structure for this church family. The first two, destroyed by fire, saw important church and town documents taken up in flames with the structures. The picture you see below is stored in the vault. It was taken sometime between 1900-1922. Those were the years the particular organ you see was housed in the sanctuary. A different instrument was installed in 1922 and the current organ in 1972.

At our last Council meeting, we charged new member, Paul Doutrich, to implement a Church Tercentennial Celebration Committee to plan a year (June 2020 - June 2021) of celebrations. In the coming months Paul will assemble this committee and begin to develop a calendar of events for the church and wider community to mark this historic moment in time. He and others will also begin to review and organize all of the fascinating pictures and documents contained in the vault, so that they will be preserved and available for generations to come.

Faithfully,
Joe

Annual Food Pantry Drive

What a Great Start!
Yesterday, the Chatham Village Market dropped off all this food that was purchased by a very generous church family member for our food drive. Many multiples  of All the items on our list!
That should inspire all of us to give generously. The need is great.  Collection boxes are in the breezeway hall.

Collections will be ongoing through Lent.

One of the most wonderful expressions of faith during the sacred season of Lent is doing for others. We all have an opportunity to do this through our annual food pantry drive, which is being co-hosted by the youth of our church and our Missions ministry. You may recall we used to have our drive during pumpkin season, until the Chatham and Harwich Food Pantry helped us understand that the need is far greater this time of year.
Collections will be ongoing through Lent.

Don't forget to add these donation items to your grocery list!
We are asking for specific items on the following list
 from the Chatham Food Pantry

Granola Bars
Progresso Soups
Canned Fruit
Cans of Beef Stew
Cans of Coffee
Crystal Light
Pasta
Crackers/ Cookies
Shampoo

Healing Service

Tuesday, March 19 at 7pm
In the sanctuary, lit softly in candlelight, with the sounds of water trickling through a fountain and the meditative music of a flute, harp or piano, we come to pray to support one another as we journey together in community.

This is a worship service with a liturgy of prayers and scripture. We offer prayers for those present who desire healing of mind, body or spirit. We also pray for our friends and families, our community and all the people of the world.

It is a service that allows us to take time for quiet reflection while opening ourselves to God's healing Spirit, that it may fill us with His love, His joy and His peace.
