A Note from the Executive Director
Dancing. Why is that in my head as I sit down to write this month’s piece for The Beacon? Well, for a number of disparate reasons – COVID, physical activity and a flute concert! Let me explain.

Firstly, I came across a prescient article titled the "Hammer and the Dance" that was written over a year ago in March 2020 (right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic) by a Stanford graduate, Thomas Pueyo. In this article he suggested that countries should adopt a hammer and dance strategy to address the COVID-19 pandemic. The hammer phase being a period with extreme measures such as lockdowns, travel restrictions, contact tracing, widespread testing, and identification, isolation and care for those infected to get the spread of the virus under control as quickly as possible. The hammer phase is followed by the dance phase‚ a period of stabilization during which time as many restrictions as possible are lifted while still maintaining low rates of infection. During the dance phase, there is always the possibility of tightening the restrictions again if needed, for example, if infection rates increase. It seems that over the past year all of us have lived through the hammer phase and we are now negotiating the dance phase.

At Senior Coastsiders we re-opened for in-person dining, classes, and activities on July 7th and have welcomed new and returning participants who are delighted to spend time with one another. We are doing the dance of lifting restrictions while keeping everyone safe. We require that all unvaccinated individuals wear masks when entering our facility and strongly encourage mask wearing when our visitors are not actively eating, drinking, or engaged in physical activity. We continue to closely monitor the increasing infection rates in California and are ready to adapt again as needed.

My usual thoughts about dancing are much more cheerful than the hammer and dance strategy for addressing COVID-19! As a physical activity researcher, advocate and lifelong practitioner (my goal is to run 365 miles this year – that’s a mile a day), I also think of all the benefits of dancing. The physical benefits include improved cardiorespiratory fitness; increased muscular strength, endurance, motor fitness and aerobic fitness; stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis; better coordination, agility and flexibility, and improved balance and spatial awareness. Additional benefits include improved mental functioning and wellbeing and several research studies have described benefits of dance for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. I encourage you to spend some time this month dancing to your favorite music. This can be with someone else or on your own, in which case you can dance with abandon as you don’t need to worry what you look like!

And finally, I am writing this piece in the dining room at the Center listening to a flute concert performed by the very talented Gale Edwards. Her wonderful music has everyone toe tapping along, if not actually dancing. Research indicates numerous benefits of listening to music caused by altered levels of hormones in the system such as decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increased levels of serotonin, endorphins and dopamine which can help elevate your mood and relieve feelings of anxiety and depression. Another reason to put on some music and dance!

Now that we are open again, feel free to call in at the office for a chat – my door is usually open.

Best wishes

Sandi

Time of Use Plans Starting in September!
Begin new habits now
As part of a statewide effort to create a cleaner energy future, many California residential electric customers moved to the Time-of-Use (Peak Pricing 4 - 9 p.m. Every Day) (E-TOU-C) rate plan. For more information and some helpful tips, click here.

This rate plan shift started in October 2020 and will continue through early 2022. San Mateo County is slated to transition in September 2021.

Some customers will not automatically move to the Time-of-Use rate plan, including:

  • Customers already on a Time-of-Use rate
  • Customers enrolled in Medical Baseline
  • Customers enrolled or eligible for CARE/FERA AND living in hot climate zones
  • Customers with <12 months of energy usage

Be sure to review your rate plan options to choose the best rate plan for your household at pge.com/ratechoices.
