Teachers Union Sues DeVos, School District over Special Ed
[Source; Education Week]

The Chicago Teachers Union on Wednesday announced it is suing U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and the city's public school district, saying its policies interfere with the education of students with special needs during the coronavirus pandemic.

DeVos and Chicago Public Schools have failed "to provide resources and guidance for special education students" during the public health crisis, the union said in a news release announcing the federal lawsuit.

Lawmakers Tell DOE That COVID-19 Guidance Is 'Robbing Public Schools'
[Source:  Politics K-12 Blog via Education Week]

Top Democrats for education in Congress told U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos that her guidance about federal coronavirus relief is way out of bounds and that she should abandon it.
A letter sent Wednesday to DeVos by the heads of two House education panels and a top member of the Senate education committee says that through that guidance, DeVos "seeks to repurpose hundreds-of-millions of taxpayer dollars intended for public school students to provide services for private school students, in contravention of both the plain reading of the statute and the intent of Congress." They also cite analyses provided by states about the amount and share of relief aid that would shift from public to private school students due to the guidance.

[Source:  LA Times]

Children's Temperament Traits Affect Their Motor Skills
[Source: Science Daily]

A recent study among 3- to 7-year-old children showed that children's motor skills benefited if a child was older and participated in organized sports. Additionally, the study provided information about the importance of temperament traits for motor skills.

In essence, motor skills comprise locomotor, ball and balance skills, all of which are present in everyday life tasks like running, climbing, throwing and drawing. Adequate motor skills enable participation in typical games and types of playing for different ages and developmental phases, for example, in tag, running and ball games.

Easy at Home Scissors Skills Practice Lion Craft
[Source: No Time For Flashcards]

Scissor skills are an essential life skill, but learning and practicing them can be tricky! The best way to start is with plastic scissors and play dough, but once children can cut paper, then it's time for some activities that help build these skills like this scissor skills practice lion craft. No one likes to practice any skill just to practice, and no parent or teacher wants to argue or negotiate to get a student to practice either. The best way is through play and creative pursuits, like this lion! Crafts aren't my main focus in my classroom, but crafts like this lion craft that really hones in on a specific skill are awesome.

SLP Corner: How to Prevent a Clear Mask from Fogging
[Source: Speech Room News]

As speech-language pathologists across the country wrap up the 2019-2020 school year, we're thinking about what fall may look like for therapy. The CDC continues to share the knowledge that direct contact with droplets is how COVID-19 is shared. SLPs are going to be required to avoid direct contact with air droplets from talking while working up close and personal with children and that seems impossible for a specialty that focuses part of our work specifically in their mouths for speech sound production.

Pediatric Tx Corner: A Day at the Beach: Deep Learning for a Child
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

The beach offers a wide open playscape where children are fueled by curiosity. Whether at the beach or elsewhere outdoors, it helps to take a moment to see the world through the lens of a child who is discovering the world anew, and slow down to be present.

Part of what happens through children's play is the exhilaration of making choices. These choices, and their consequences, are part of the child's emerging sense of agency and identity.
