"Say Something" Video Raises Awareness About Standing Up in Potentially Abusive Situations
Vera House Partners with Solon Quinn Studios to Launch Powerful Video
A video produced here in Downtown Syracuse is going viral across the nation - and its sending a strong message about standing up in an abusive situation. Produced by Solon Quinn Studios (which operates out of the Tech Garden) and Vera House, the video is set in The Stoop Kitchen. It shows a bartender actively stepping in after witnessing a man dump a drink on his girlfriend. The bartender gives the woman a bracelet that has the phone number to the Vera House 24-7 emergency hotline (315-468-3260). There is a link to watch the video below, but please note, it may be uncomfortable to watch.
Vera House, which aims to end domestic and sexual violence, as well as other forms of abuse, recently partnered with several Downtown Syracuse restaurants and bars to launch the "Raise the Bar" Healthy Nightlife Initiative. The campaign aims to help prevent sexual harassment and sexual and relationship violence by educating establishments on how to identify deescalating situations. Participating establishments receive special training that focuses on bystander intervention and skills for identifying (and how to appropriately respond to) possible sexual aggression and relationship abuse.
The Stoop Kitchen is one of several restaurants participating in the initiative. Owner Eric Alderman recently told NewsChannel 9 that the restaurant/bar has a zero tolerance policy, and will stand up when they see anyone being harassed, abused or assaulted.
