The Center Stage Series presents the Westerlies — Friday, February 15, 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. The Westerlies , a New York-based brass quartet, with two trumpets and two trombones, delivers genre-defying chamber “new music” in the spirit of jazz improvisation that demonstrates both virtuosity and grace, intellectual rigor and loveliness. Get your tickets at the ticket office or tickets.luther.edu. Tickets are FREE for students with CAF, and general admission tickets are also available for students.

REMINDER:  You must be registered for all spring classes by Friday, February 15. If a Department Head must add you to a class, that will need to happen by then as well. Most students' financial aid is based on full-time status (at least 12 credits), so if you have financial aid, your registration is very important!   

Spring Semester Student Activities Fair — February 12 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. in the Union, Williams Lounge. Visit with organization leaders, gather information, and sign up to get involved.

“You” Television Show Discussion – Join Counseling Service along with advocates from Helping Services and Riverview Center for a discussion on the popular Lifetime/Netflix show “You”. Discuss your thoughts on the show and information about healthy and unhealthy relationships. Wednesday, February 13, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in Main 116B.

Student Senate currently has a seat open for any individual looking to join the governing student body of Luther College. If you would like to apply to be the  Diversity Representative for Culture and Religion , please email  [email protected]  before next Wednesday, February 13 that you will be interested to serve for the Spring 2019 semester.

Grey's Anatomy Trivia Night , hosted by SAC Special Events, will be Wednesday, February 13 in Marty's. Form a team of up to 6 and test your Grey's Anatomy knowledge! Teams sign-ups begin at 6:30 p.m. and trivia will begin at 7 p.m. Cookies will be provided.

Screening of Freedom Writer's: Hillary Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the real-life teacher at Long Beach's Wilson High who, amid racial and gang tension, finds a way to connect with her at-risk, "unteachable" students. Gruwell helps them forego teenage pregnancy, drugs, and violence, and re-chart their futures through writing. Watch the movie to prepare for Gruwell's keynote and visit to campus 2/20. Screening: Wednesday, February 13th, 6:30 p.m. Valders 206. Free and open to the public.

CEPE Spring Book Groups: Explore viewpoints on various topics: religion and ethics; American identity and religious diversity; racial inequality; balancing the rights of pregnant women with the rights of the unborn; and how equal societies can improve everyone's well-being. Check out the line-up of books and sign up  here .

The Summer Student/Faculty Collaborative Research  program provides opportunity for students to engage in collaborative research projects with faculty members during the two months of Luther's summer session (June/July).  Proposals are due in the Dean's Office (Union 262) by 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 11.  Click here for complete information and application guidelines.

"College Broke" to Six Figures  - Sharon Bui, founder of Frill Clothing, will share the story of how she took $350 and a dream and created a successful company that was featured on the hit programs Shark Tank and Beyond the Tank. Come learn how to go from "college broke" to building the business of your dreams. Open to all students free of charge. Monday, February 11, 7:00 p.m. in Olin 102.

Selected readings available ahead of Ibram Kendi's February 28 Distinguished Lecture. Read the prologue of Kendi's  Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America ( National Book Award Winner)   and two other short articles. Professor Guy Nave will lead discussion Thursday, 2/21, 9:40-10:50 and Kendi will be on hand for follow-up conversation at 3:30 on the 28th . Email  cepe  to sign up and receive readings.

February Chapel will explore  Prophets and Poets  as we begin a new semester and celebrate Black History Month. The voices of  Prophets and Poets  lift questions of hope, justice, community, truth and in surprising and subversive ways. Join us for February Chapel Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the CFL as we explore connections of Scripture, poetry and faith. Join the Luther Congregation for Gospel Sunday with guest preacher, Rev. Kara Baylor, LC '92, on Sunday, February 24, 10:00 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

Seniors: Individual study carrels are again available for reservation on a first-come, first served basis in Preus Library. The carrels are located along the perimeter of the third floor and are assigned for personal use on a per-semester basis. Contact Eddy Atwell at  [email protected]  to request a senior carrel reservation for the spring. There are a limited number dedicated for this use.

Luther College Piano Quartet presents a program of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Luther College Piano Quartet, now in its 11th year, is comprised of four Luther music faculty; Miko Kominami, piano; Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; and Philip Borter, cello.

This past Saturday night, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra performed in the Golden Hall at Vienna's famed Musikverein concert hall. Come hear why the audience of 1,200 gave a sustained ovation. The Orchestra will perform its Vienna Homecoming Concert Sunday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

Admissions will host a Scholar Recognition Day on Saturday, February 9 and Saturday February 23 to recognize the highest achieving admitted students at Luther, and allow those students the chance to interact with faculty and current students. Students who have been awarded the Founder's, President's or Dean's Scholarship, or the Martin Luther Award are invited to attend the event.

All high school participants involved in the Dorian Orchestra Festival will perform a concert at 5:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Both the string and chamber orchestras feature high school students from the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Students have a chance to participate in rehearsals, lessons, masterclasses and technique classes with Luther string faculty.

High school string players participating in Luther's Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive will present a recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, February 10, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Four chamber groups will perform in the recital, as well as students selected as soloists from their festival lessons.

Attention Students Registered for Applied Music Lessons -- If you decide to drop applied lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for fall 2018: Dropping lessons: by February 10 - No charge; by February 17 - $46 charge; by February 24 - $92 charge; by March 3 - $138 charge; after March 3 - Full charge/$510. This schedule will be followed with no exceptions .

Hot Reads for Cold Nights — Thanks to everyone who participated in our reading challenge this January! Our readers submitted 92 books over the three weeks and won 9 prizes.  Weekly prize winners:  Kira Dobberman, Janna Edrington, Jennifer Folstad, Arwen Inman, Yuen Ching Lee, Vanalika Nagarwalla.  Grand prize winners:  Christopher Barrett, Lauren Luoma, Gwen Strand.

Area musicians are now invited to enroll for the Luther College Community Music School which offers group classes, private lessons and SoDa (Song and Dance) Club. Group classes will be offered Wednesday mornings to students in grades 3-8. SoDa Club, a community youth choir available to students in grades K-8, will be held Monday nights.
