Donuts with Dads at Factory Shoals Elementary
Factory Shoals Elementary School saluted dads in the school community with a special donut breakfast last week. More than 70 dads, grandads, and role models enjoyed “Donuts With Dads” February 13 in the school cafeteria. Superintendent Trent North kicked the event off by jumping in the serving line and sharing a healthy school breakfast with students. During breakfast, students wrote positive affirmations and messages about their male guests, their true heroes, on table runners throughout the cafeteria. Dads also had the opportunity to meet administrators and their child’s classmates. Later, guests took photos on a backdrop with their heroes.

“Positive role male models impact students and our school in a very meaningful way,” counselor Jemarcus Johnson says. “We wanted to use this ‘Donuts with Dad’ event to strengthen the positive relationship between school and our community.”

Principal Kenja Parks agrees, calling the event a tremendous success. “It has been a blessing to see dads and role models intentionally bond with our students over breakfast. These small moments make a big difference in the lives of children,” Principal Parks says. “We love our dads, our grandfathers, and all our community role models. We are excited to honor, and will continue to honor their investment in the lives of our students.”
Student Scientists Selected for State Competition
Forty-eight projects competed at the West Georgia Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the University of West Georgia on February 7. Twenty-seven of the projects were from students in the Douglas County School System. Of the 27 projects from Douglas County, 15 were selected to advance to the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Athens, Georgia, March 26-28.

"We are proud of our students and the teachers who worked tirelessly to inspire, encourage and support them," said Casey Bethel, science coordinator for the Douglas County School System. "The students represented our county extremely well."

The West Georgia region for the science fair includes public and private schools from eight counties: Carroll, Polk, Haralson, Heard, Coweta, Troup, Meriwether and Douglas.

Pictured with her project at the regional fair is Layla Watson from Mason Creek Middle School. Also pictured are Chase Curtis and Samuel White from Chapel Hill Middle School during their interview with a regional judge.
FSMS Students Dig into Mining
A recent interactive lesson at Factory Shoals Middle School enabled students to explore the valuable role of rocks and minerals. Led by Mrs. Robyn Akin and Mr. Matthew Roper, the mobile adventure provided an exciting opportunity for students to dig for rocks and minerals without ever leaving campus. With the help of Diamond Del’s Gem Mining Adventure, students applied what they learned in a Rocks and Minerals unit to characterize rocks and demonstrate what they learned in class.
During the exhibit, students experienced life as a miner by panning for their very own gem collection. Students retrieved rare gems and minerals from around the globe with their classmates, all from the comfort of their school. Factory Shoals Middle School students were excited to witness Earth's natural resources and to share their finds with family and friends.
Mrs. Akin and Mr. Roper both agree this mobile mining experience is an additional way to get students excited about science.  "At Factory Shoals Middle School, we are always looking for new ways to incorporate real-life experiences into learning," Mrs. Akin says. "This gem mining adventure provides this opportunity. Through hands-on activities, our students are using what they have learned here and in the classroom and applying it to their own environment."

Good Luck to Our GHP Finalists!
Good luck to the Douglas County semifinalists for the 2020 Governor's Honors Program (GHP). These students were selected by a panel of local judges to advance to state interviews for GHP which will be held on February 22 and 29.

GHP is a four week residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be juniors and seniors in high school in August. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from typical high school classrooms and is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders. The state of Georgia covers the cost of the program for all participants. For many students, the experience at GHP is uniquely positive and often life changing.

Semifinalists from Chapel Hill, Lithia Springs and Douglas County are pictured below. Semifinalists from New Manchester and Alexander will be featured later.
GHP semifinalists from Chapel Hill High School are Dante Gayton, engineering, and Alison Aggen, theatre. From Lithia Springs High School: Angenie GeDeon, visual arts; Prince Tufon, mathematics; and Chloe Cowan, theatre.
