Postcard from the President
Believe that change is possible! This statement comes from my SE Regional Leadership Conference notes. The NAEA Southeastern region organized a powerful leadership conference in Richmond, Virginia in June with special guest participation by NAEA’s president-elect, Dr. Wanda Knight. It was a time to reunite as art leaders and to engage in discourse aligned with social justice. The week focused on Cultural Competency leveraged in the art studio classroom, school culture, and association structures. Examining Race as a social construct with Dr. Mary Conage helped inform our critical analysis of Confederate Monuments, understanding the intention behind the Mending Walls project with Hamilton Glass, and weaving these ideas through community and advocacy efforts that redefine our role as agents of positive social change. A deep dive into the artwork of Kehinde Wiley along with the exhibition The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse became part of our daily experience at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Check out the museum’s website for resources to build your curriculum for the next academic year.

The southeastern art association leaders shared action plans and updates on initiatives united in serving and representing our associations. Several state art associations will be going back to a face-to-face conference experience for the Fall, while some are opting for a hybrid model including the zoom platform as a model for sharing knowledge. Florida was proud to announce our conference at Caribe Royale in Orlando from October 14th through the 17th. Registration opens in August!

A new method learned at this past summer leadership conference was Street Casting. This method is a way to introduce inclusion into our association. All voices in our community, as members of FAEA, will be needed as we gather our post-conference survey data. Be part of the change, disrupt the narratives, celebrate the arts, and help reimagine the future of FAEA as we head into a new era of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Find time to celebrate with each other and be part of the story for the next iteration of Our History.

It is time to renew your membership and continue to be part of this transformational art education association. Reach out to someone who feels excluded and invite them to become part of our distinguished group of professional art educators. This is the time to dismantle inequities in our profession and to courageously collaborate and be part of the change!

Mixed Media Mapping the Living History of Communities
Presenters: Dr. Rachel Fendler & Dr. Sara Scott Shields
Date: July 8, 2021
Time: 9:30am - 12:30pm EDT

Curriculum can be a site to explore the gaps in official knowledge, including the history represented and missing within community spaces. Join professors Dr. Rachel Fendler and Dr. Sara Scott Shields from FSU for a workshop of discovery, exploring how art-making could fill in these knowledge gaps in effective ways by disrupting student and community understandings of the places we live in. The workshop uses mixed media and contemporary quilting inspired by Valerie Goodwin’s Map Quilts to explore the question: How might you map your community’s living history?
