Has any culture, apart from that of the tiny Utah town in Footloose, done entirely without dancing?

It would at first seem that the human need to rhythmically shake one's limbs to organize sound must reside pretty low on the overall priority scale.

But anthropology tells us that various human societies started dancing before they got into most every other activity that fills their time today.

Why is this ostensibly frivolous act so fundamental to being human? The answer seems to be found in our need for social cohesion - that vital glue that keeps societies from breaking apart despite interpersonal differences.

Modern science has shed a bit of light on why: We humans have a natural tendency to synchronize our movements with other humans, thanks to a region in the brain which helps us make the same movements we see others making.

When we mimic our partner's movements, and they're mimicking ours, similar neural networks in both networks open up a rush of neurohormones, all of which make us feel good.

Listening to music can create such a euphoric delight that it appears to activate opioid receptors in the brain, making it even harder to resist getting up and dancing.

They said he'd never win but he knew he had to is the tagline from Footloose - an assurance that turns out to have had a basis in neurology.

George Harrison played many classic guitars during the course of his career, popularizing some models so extensively that he is inextricably linked with them. During his time with the Beatles, he helped make famous the Rickenbacker 360/12 electric 12-string, a rosewood version of the Fender Telecaster, and the Gibson J-160E acoustic/electric. Now, thanks to a new iPad app, they will be available for all to see and hear.
IN THE BASSMENT

The EVO-FX4 is a bass with a tone that is balanced and unique. Although it has a bit of a headstock, this bass is fitted with a headless tuning system by DB Steinberger. Its German ash body is matched to a five-piece laminated maple and rosewood fingerboard, which is then topped with a rosewood fingerboard. For electronics, Rinaldis opted for a set of Aguilar DCB pickups and an 18-volt Audere Pro Z preamp.

We've seen a lot of quarantine video collaborations over the past few months, but former Machine Head electric guitar player Phil Demmel may have just won the collabo-prize with his Collab-A-Jam #1. This new video sees the former Machine Head guitarist take on Thin Lizzy's Bad Reputation with a lineup consisting of Judas Priest shredder Richie Faulkner, Alice in Chains bassist Mike Inez, Sacred Reich drummer Dave McClain and, on vocals, "Thin" Lzzy Hale.

The bridge is the body-end termination point for your strings' speaking length, and their vibration needs to pass through the bridge to get into the tonewood in the body. Therefore, the quality of the body's resonance is going to be in great part determined by the composition and quality of the bridge (and tailpiece, if they are separate units). The bridge is an essential link in the tone chain, ranking right up there with your guitar's pickups and the wood the body is made from. It also greatly affects sustain.
