Winter Gardening & Prepping for Spring Planting
|
Join your fellow gardeners this Saturday from 10 - 11 a.m. to learn about planting options for the cooler months of January and February as well as ways prepare your garden for spring planting.
Our guest speaker, Urban Roots owner Zach Grace, will review vegetable options with 45-60 day harvest cycles and flowers that grow successfully in January and February. He also will share recommendations on amending soil in advance of March planting and discuss fertilization methods to optimize vegetable production during our spring to summer growing season.
About our Speaker:
Zach Grace is a lifelong gardener with family roots in Northern Kenucky and Southeastern Indiana. His family owns Grace Garden Center, in Temple Terrace, where Zach worked with his parent for years before opening Urban Roots Garden Supply with his wife, Bianca. Urban Roots is located at 11780 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Carrollwood (next to Villagio Cinemas). In addition to Zach and Bianca you also may meet their Labrador Retrievers, Ash and Rajah, and the infamous cat, Mr. Beans (unless he’s wandered off).
*Urban Roots is the generous sponsor of VISTA’s experimental garden – donating seeds, transplants, soil amendments, fertilizers, and biologics for disease and Integrated Pest Management.

Task of the Week: Side Dressing with Compost
Courtesy of the Garden Committee
Side dressing is the application of fertilizers in a shallow furrow or band along the side of vegetable row crops or in a circle around individual plants.
Side dressing gives extra nutrients to vegetable crops so that they can produce to their full potential.
- Gently create 4"deep furrow around plant’s “drip line”
- Add 2" of compost into furrow
- Cover with your garden soil
Side dressing is commonly done when plants need extra nutrients for growth–at flowering or fruiting time and in the second half of the growing season. From midseason on vegetable crops make rapid growth and quickly use nutrients put in place before sowing or transplanting. Side dressing also resupplies nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements leached form root zone by irrigation.
