Robotics teams awarded at STEM Festival
Lower, Middle School teams receive honors

Pinewood's robotics program and admissions team were represented at last weekend's Charleston STEM Festival, which included STEM-based exhibitions and entertainment, as well as hands-on activities.

The Universe Unicorns team (one of Pinewood's Middle School girls' robotics teams)  was named among the top two robotics teams from the event, receiving the South Carolina Global Innovation Award Winner title. The team members now have two weeks to formally describe their project research, studies, design iterations, and presentation in the form of five essays and a supporting document. If they are ranked in the top 20 percent of submissions, they will advance to the National Competition in San Jose, California in June. The Universe Unicorns are under the direction of Liz Lemons.

Pinewood's Grade 3 FLL Team, the Junior Astropanthers (led by Coach Faith Bongiorno), received the Best Teamwork award for their presentation.

Also in attendance were Pinewood Robotics teams Space Invaders (Middle School) and Event Horizon (Lower School).

Saralyn Rivera and Nicole Bailey represented Pinewood's Admissions Department, and Stephanie Klixbull represented Pinewood's Idea Lab.

News Briefs
A quick look around campus

Last week was a very artistic week in Herve Moreau's Grade 7 Spanish class! Students researched the life and work of artists such as Picasso, Dali, Botero, Frida Kahlo, Quino, Velazquez, and many others. Then, they presented their Google Slides biography of their artist of choice to their classmates. In order to get a better appreciation for these artists' craft, and to better understand artistic movements such as Cubism, Luminism, or Surrealism, students had to recreate on canvas their version of a famous piece by this artist.

Lower School Global Studies students learned about how Haitians are resourceful when it comes to their crafts and artwork. They saw examples of designs on stationery, notecards, and prints made from dried banana leaves.

Many of the classes experimented with this technique and created pictures to depict typical Caribbean scenes. The students' artwork is on display in front of the Lower School Global Studies Classroom (Frenise Bowen's room), so please take a moment to view their work!

In last week's study of the letter "B," PK3 students learned about bears as well as the human body!
