LITTLE FAITH
by Nickolas Butler

The truth is Nickolas Butler LOVES Wisconsin and his characters, as demonstrated in his new novel. Lyle and his wife Peg have lived in the same small town in western Wisconsin their entire lives surrounded by a loving group of friends. Their only child, Shiloh, and their beloved grandson Isaac get sucked into the grips of a fundamentalist church. The charismatic pastor (or charlatan?) believes Isaac may be a healer. Butler tries to balance the issue of faith with the fundamentals of living a basic life in a small town, a way of life which may be evaporating.

As two college friends embark on a canoe trip in the Canadian wilderness their limits are tested by, (among other things), fire, a potential murderer and a passenger they weren't expecting. An exciting, riveting page-turner which is so much more than a survival story. A beautiful ode to friendship, a meditation on grief and Peter Heller's stunning writing about the natural world. WHEN WE LEFT CUBA
by Chanel Cleeton

Cleeton grew up hearing her own family's stories of exile from Cuba, and has translated them into this richly told historical novel. Fictional Beatriz Perez grew up on a sugar plantation when Batista ruled Cuba. When Castro came into power, her family lost everything and fled to Palm Beach, where Beatriz's social standing soared. She met the love of her life, but her determination to avenge her brother's death took her on a dangerous path away from Palm Beach society and into Castro's inner circle. An interesting look into the Cuban Revolution with intrigue and passion at every turn.

YOUNG READERS SELECTIONS
YOUNG ADULTS:

THE ART OF LOSING

by Lizzy Mason

The Art of Losing by Lizzy Mason is a debut novel meant for high schoolers. I tore through this story about a family who is suffering because their youngest daughter (Audrey) is in a coma after a drunk driving incident. The situation is made even trickier as Audrey's older sister's (Harley) boyfriend was the driver. Adding to the drama, Harley found Audrey and Harley's boyfriend together at a party prior to the accident. This coming-of-age novel is relevant and has very authentic, well-drawn characters.

MIDDLE SCHOOL:

SWEEPING UP THE HEART
by Kevin Henkes
(Releases March 19, 2019)

Kevin Henkes' latest middle grade novel begins "Poor Amelia Albright," and you might agree with those words as you learn that she lost her mother at age two, her father is emotionally closed off and has said no to a trip to Florida for spring vacation. As you get to know Amelia you will change your mind; she is an amazing sculptor, has two loving women that guide her and she makes a new friend at her art studio. The spring break that she thought was going to be a bust works out quite well for "Poor Amelia."  I loved this gentle story!
