Alcohol Policies and Suicide Prevention
How alcohol policies and suicide correlate is a very intriguing concept. A review of literature was conducted in 2016, examining 20 different research studies from all over the world. They found the protective effect of restrictive alcohol policies can carry over to have an impact on preventing suicide. They discussed four policies that make a difference: Alcohol Price & Taxation, Minimum Legal Drinking Age Law, Alcohol Outlet Density Regulations, and Zero Tolerance Laws*. This concept reinforces efforts to incorporate restrictive alcohol policies for positive youth outcomes. The APRC has developed an infographic highlighting the link between alcohol policy and suicide prevention.

New Tip Sheets from Prevention First for Remote Learning
Prevention First has developed two new Tip Sheets centering around solutions to remote learning.
The first is 15 Ideas to Connect with Schools - this tip sheet presents ideas for activities and types of information you can provide to students and teachers to keep them engaged with prevention if in-class YPE presentations are not an option at this time.
However, if you are having or predict issues with contacting schools, Engaging with Schools During Remote Instruction, presents ideas for predicting and overcoming roadblocks you may encounter when communicating with your school stakeholders as many of them have moved to remote instruction.

Professional in the Time of Covid-19

For many of us, the continuing COVID-19 pandemic is increasing feelings of stress, anxiety, and isolation. This virtual learning event explores the impact of stress and anxiety on our physical and mental wellbeing. Presenter Dodi Swope will highlight self-care techniques for reducing stress and strategies for overcoming common barriers to integrating healthy self-care into daily life. Participants will explore and practice methods to identify what works best for them.
Learning Objectives:
- Define two types of stress and their impact on physical and mental wellbeing.
- List four self-care techniques.
- Describe one barrier and a solution for integrating self-care into a daily routine.
The Great Lakes PTTC offers this training to prevention practitioners in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, and WI.

Rebecca S. Williams Ph.D., M.H.S., is a researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, has spent more than 20 years studying the sales and marketing practices of websites that sell age-restricted products such as tobacco, e-cigarettes, alcohol, kratom, and cannabis, with a keen eye towards policy change related to youth access prevention and tax evasion.

Preventing Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse is an online course designed for substance misuse prevention professionals who would like a better understanding of prescription drug and opioid misuse.
