Lists of Free Things and Grants for Kids with Special Needs

We shared an article this week that had a list of free things and grants for kids with special needs, and it was pointed out in the comments that it was a few years old and had a few things that were out of date in it. We shared this from the Panhandle Autism Society:
The Panhandle Autism Society is excited about our 9th annual Walk for Autism Awareness in North Idaho! Last year we were humbled by our communities participation and support with over 600 individuals participating in the event! This event is the biggest fundraiser for autism awareness in the North Idaho area. All proceeds go to benefit the Panhandle Autism Society. The donations are used exclusively to benefit families and individuals in North Idaho whose lives are impacted by autism.
The funds from last years walk helped contribute to: Funding nearly $10,000 in local individual grants, 5 social and support groups were continued with record number attendance at our teen and tween groups, parents were again able to attend our fall conference and we were able to continue our mission to train law enforcment and 1st responders in North Idaho and surrounding areas, attend a multitude of community events where we spread AUTISM AWARENESS throughout our amazing community! Thank YOU North Idaho as none of this is possible with out your continued SUPPORT!

We shared this article about the struggle a child who processes information slowly faces in the modern world:
As a child psychologist, I’ve worked with countless kids who are intelligent, but who process information at a slower pace. I’m not just a psychologist, however. I’m also a mom. And my 21-year-old son has processing speed issues (along with
ADHD
).
In many ways, my son and I are very much alike. But we are quite different when it comes to how fast we take in and handle information.
He speaks slowly and chooses words carefully. I speak fast and always have (perhaps) too much to say.
I love having a hundred things going at one time. He would prefer to do one thing at a time, and do it well. I’m always running in a million different directions—and, because of that, I’m frequently late. He likes getting places on time.
Of course, I understand the concept of slow processing speed. (I even wrote a
book
all about the topic!) Yet there are still days when I find it tough to put myself in my son’s shoes. It’s not easy to understand why he won’t get things done on my timeline.

There are a lot of things happening at the Idaho Legislature each day that they are in session (typically from January through March.) Did you know that you can access the daily agendas on their website? You can also listen into the committee hearings that stream live. Idaho Parents Unlimited pays close attention to the House and Senate Health and Welfare and Education committees but you may interested in hearing about agencies, proposed rule changes, and other legislative action as well. With busy schedules and proximity - not everyone lives in the Treasure Valley - shocking! - this is a great way to stay on top of things no matter where you are. Daily agendas are found here:

Getting and Keeping the First Job
Broadcast Live from the Boise office and interactive statewide via webinar platform.
Getting and Keeping the First Job
Wednesday, March 13, 2019, 5:30 - 7:00 pm MT
Participants will learn about the importance of employment for all and its particular impact on people with disabilities. The critical role of families and engaging youth in career planning as well as maintaining high expectations of youth are included. Basic job search activities as well as skills that help youth with disabilities keep the jobs they get.
Again, we welcome people who want to attend the training in person at our Boise office. (Please plan to be in the office at least by 5:20 p.m.) People attending remotely via our simulcast webinar will only need to have a modern web browser to attend. (And you can do that via computer, smartphone, or tablet)
You will receive a confirmation email, but it won't have the link to the webinar just yet. We are changing to a new webinar platform. As soon as we have that, you will have a follow-up email with the link to attend via webinar, even if you are planning to attend the training in our Boise office in person.

Just a reminder that we have changed how we present our webinars - rather than a live webinar, will be releasing a series of shorter, prerecorded modules on the same topic as our statewide training. The idea being that once we put them up, they will remain available for anyone to register to see and watch at their leisure.
