March 8, 2020 ~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time
Bethany Ralph, the first girl to captain the Whitman- Hanson wrestling team, does it with pizzazz.
Bethany Ralph is in the Finals of the All-State Girls Wrestling Tournament. As a senior captain on the wrestling team, Bethany has had an incredible career. She placed 2nd at the Sandwich (Varsity Boys) Tournament and pinned a number of tough wrestlers this season. But what has been so inspiring about Bethany is her work ethic and humble leadership skills. She’s an excellent student, works multiple jobs, jogs outside of practice, trains hard during the off season, and has always displayed exemplary sportsmanship. As a current parent of a freshman wrestler, I couldn’t think of a better role model for my son.

Historical Tidbit:

Did You Know...

Stepmothers were sometimes called "mothers-in-laws"?

Infant once meant any person under 21?

Housekeeper once meant property owner?

Domestic once meant housewife?

Mister was applied only to men of wealth and education?

Relic meant widow?

The custom of wearing a wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand came from the ancient belief that the nerve in that finger connected directly to the heart.

Pajama Drive for Homeless Children
Now through March 15th
The Whitman Public Library will continue with the annual Pajama Drive for homeless children, in conjunction with Cradles to Crayons and the Boston Bruins. We have a goal of 200 pajamas, and there is still time to try and reach that goal.
We appreciate the generous help of our patrons, who have already donated almost 80 pairs of pajamas. We still need some larger sizes for both boys and girls. Any questions call 781-447-7613.
Congratulations to Savannah Murphy
During the fall of 2019, the Brockton Area Prevention Collaborative invited students from across the greater Brockton region to participate in a Sticker Shock Contest. What is Sticker Shock you may ask? Sticker Shock is a prevention initiative that engages local youth to address underage drinking in their community. Five local school districts participated in the contest including Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.

Students were tasked with creating a sticker design that included a prevention message to deter adults from buying alcohol for minors. Sticker entries were required to highlight the Massachusetts Social Host Law including the penalties for buying alcohol for minors which is up to one year in jail and/or $2,000 in fines. The winner of the contest would have their sticker printed and posted in local liquor stores to spread this youth-driven prevention message.

All students from Whitman Hanson Regional High School's computer graphic design class, led by District Lead Art Teacher, Christina Maher, submitted entries into the regional Sticker Shock Contest. Savannah Murphy, a student in this class, created the winning sticker that will now be disseminated in local liquor stores and businesses across the region. In some communities, the sticker will even be posted in multiple languages.

On March 10th, Savannah will join her peers from the high school's Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapter, as well as members from Whitman Hanson WILL, the Collaborative and the town's police departments, to disseminate stickers throughout the 21 establishments that sell alcohol in Whitman and Hanson. Murphy’s sticker will be placed as window clings on beer coolers, in addition to post cards at store counters with the intent of swaying adults from purchasing alcohol for minors.

Hope .
"Once you choose hope, anything’s possible."
~ Christopher Reeve

" I dwell in possibility." ~ Emily Dickinson

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." ~ Nelson Mandela

"Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness." ~ Desmond Tutu

"You get in life what you have the courage to ask for." ~ Oprah Winfrey
Hope is not a thing of childish dreaming... no, it is a powerful tool by which we change the world. We decide each day how to view things, how to move forward.
I choose to have hope. Hope in the goodness of humanity, hope that together we can find solutions and make choices healthy for all of us.

Hopefully yours, Jacquie
