Toasting Promotions and Tenure
Members of the College of Nursing attended the USF Health reception on Oct. 3 honoring faculty who achieved promotions and/or tenure.

Alicia Rossiter, DNP, FNP, PPCNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, was promoted to associate professor. Teresa Gore, PhD, DNP, FNP-BC, NP-C, CHSE-A, FAAN, was promoted to professor. Harleah Buck, PhD, RN, FPCN, FAAN, received tenure. And Connie Visovsky, PhD, RN, ACNP, FAAN, was promoted to professor, but could not attend the event.
Researchers Honor Nursing Elite
Nurse leaders from the USF College of Nursing attended the American Academy of Nursing's annual conference in Washington, D.C., where nursing associate professor Hsiao-Lan Wang, PhD, RN, CMSRN, ACSM EP-C, was inducted into the 2019 class of Academy fellows.

College of Nursing professors also participated in expert panels and supported nursing research by attending the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) NightinGala.
Nursing Students Take on Tally
Four USF College of Nursing students traveled to Tallahassee on Oct. 23 to participate in the annual USF Day at the Capitol event organized by student government.

Explore Global Nursing Education
USF College of Nursing undergraduate students interested in a global community health experience can attend one of two information sessions to learn more.

The upcoming meetings about the spring global nursing trips will be held from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15 in MDN 1022.

Bull Nurses Inducted into Sigma
Congratulations to the 22 USF College of Nursing students who became members of the Sigma nursing honor society and joined their ranks to promote nursing excellence.

The students were inducted during a Oct. 10 ceremony at Plant Hall at the University of Tampa. The group belongs to Sigma's Delta Beta at-Large chapter.
Taking the Flu by the Horns
USF College of Nursing students were busy last month protecting the herd.

About 760 people lined up to get free flu shots at the annual College of Public Health Flu Shot Drive on Oct. 18.

Days later, flu shots were also given at the Benefits Fair and Wellness Expo at the Marshall Student Center. USF Health students, including those in nursing, also helped administer blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol screenings.
Panel Talks About Being Fearless
USF College of Nursing professor Theresa Beckie, PhD, MN, RN, FAHA, FAAN, was featured on a panel discussion titled "Be Bold, Take Risks" as part of the 14th annual USF Women in Leadership and Philanthropy Fall Symposium held on Oct. 4 in Tampa.

Dr. Beckie, along with co-panelists Susan Blackburn and Dr. Lyda Lindell, talked about ways to take calculated and ambitious steps toward achieving goals.
Forum Focuses on LGBTQ+ Issues
The USF College of Nursing Diversity Committee hosted a health care panel on Oct. 30 featuring members of the LGBTQ+ community who shared personal stories and experiences with health care workers and discussed best practices in the health care setting.

Panelists included Kiala Emmons, Abbie Rolf, and Lucas Wehle.
Professor Chosen for Faculty Senate Council
USF College of Nursing professor Ming Ji, PhD, has been appointed to serve on the Faculty Senate Council on Technology for Instruction and Research.

Dr. Ji will serve a three-year term from Fall 2019 to Fall 2022. The committee is responsible for advising the USF Faculty Senate and the provost on all matters regarding the use of technology in instruction and research.
Homecoming 2019
USF Health's Homecoming 2019 was one for the nursing record books.

On Tuesday, we were winning at twinning. On Wednesday, Dean Victoria L. Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN , was ready to outrun the competition at the Wellness Walk. Staff showed their healthy spirit by sporting workout gear.

By the end of the week, a nurse dog won the Most Spirited Pet photo contest.

And our "Back to the Future"-themed Office Decorating submission blasted the competitors and took the top prize. Go Bulls!
Forging Future Global Partnerships
Representatives from USF Health and USF College of Nursing traveled to Colombia in early October to meet with health leaders at the Hospital Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Nursing faculty members Barbara Smith, PhD, RN, FACSM, FAAN, and Ivonne Hernandez, PhD, RN, IBCLC, were working to forge new partnerships in the global nursing program.
Fielding a Day of Fun and Games
On Oct. 5, family and friends of the USF College of Nursing spent Field Day at USF Riverfront Park.

The gathering featured games, food, music and a collection drive for the Bahamas hurricane relief. The event was hosted by the college's Doctoral Nursing Student Organization.
Nurse Receives Highest Alumni Award
Three-time USF College of Nursing graduate Geraldine Twine (seated second from right) was honored for her outstanding contributions to the community during the USF Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Awards ceremony on Oct. 10.

Twine, who received nursing degrees from USF in 1978, 1981, and 1988, was one of the first black advanced registered nurse practitioners in Florida and one of the first black nurses to integrate Tampa General Hospital.
Publication Workshop Held at Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Bull Nurse Anesthetists Win College Bowl Championship
USF Bulls bested rival schools in the ultimate test of anesthesia knowledge. Student anesthetists from the College of Nursing placed in the top 2 spots and defended the championship title by winning the 5th annual student college bowl on Oct. 5 at the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists' annual meeting.
Donuts and Photos with the Dean
USF College of Nursing students stopped by the Gathering Space on Oct. 2 for a sweet treat and a photo op featuring Rocky D. Bull and Dean Victoria L. Rich at the Donuts with the Dean event.

A second Donuts with the Dean event has been scheduled for Nov. 18 at USF St. Petersburg.
Heritage Month Ends with Espa ñol
The USF College of Nursing closed out a month of Hispanic Heritage awareness with a medical Spanish expo on Oct. 16 that offered translation strategies and common Spanish phrases for health care providers to use in clinical practice.

Earlier in the month, passersby enjoyed a cup of c afé con leche while learning about voting rights and mental health trends in the Latinx community at the Oct. 3 Coffee with a Cause event.
Bulls Win 4 U's Flu Shot Showdown
When it comes to fighting the flu, USF Bulls beat their rivals and won the Intercollegiate Flu Shot Competition on Oct. 2.

Together, the four U's (USF, UCF, FSU, and UF) vaccinated 3,462 students. According to USF Student Health Services, the final tally of flu shots given at each school was: 1,181 for USF, 838 for UCF, 767 for FSU, and 676 for UF.
Nursing Staffer Goes Above and Beyond
The College of Nursing's contractor administrator Kimberly Brown was recently honored with the Above & Beyond Award from the USF Office of Supplier Diversity.

The award was presented on Oct. 4 during the USF Supplier Diversity Day. It is given to a USF employee who has made exceptional contributions to sustain and strengthen the supplier diversity initiatives at USF.
Professor Honored for Dissertation

USF College of Nursing assistant professor Victoria Marshall, PhD, RN, recently received the Emiline Hamilton PhD Dissertation Award Endowment from her alma mater Michigan State University.

The competitive award is given to graduates who are within one year of completing their dissertation and recognizes a nominee's potential as a career nurse scientist.
Oral Health Patent Gains Approval

USF College of Nursing assistant professor Paula Cairns, PhD, RN, is part of a team that recently received an approved patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The invention relates to using digital imaging to standardize, assess, and score oral health in patients.

Other USF Health inventors listed on the patent include Kevin Kip, PhD, FAHA.
Students Serve on Leadership Board
Three USF College of Nursing students have been selected to serve on the 2019-2020 USF Health Executive Student Leadership Board.

Kayla Wilson, Anthony Suda, and Jaelyn Brown are nursing student representatives who will assist at student engagement events, provide campus tours, and serve in a student advisory role for Shared Student Services and USF Health leadership.
Grants for Advanced Nursing Students
Nursing students studying to be family nurse practitioners will have two new scholarships available to help with tuition costs.

The USF College of Nursing was recently awarded $2,000 from the CVS Health Foundation Advance Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant Scholarship program. The money, awarded through the college's internal scholarship process, will fund two $1,000 grants for family nurse practitioner students in 2020.
Dean Rich Featured in Pitt Nurse Magazine
USF College of Nursing Dean Victoria L. Rich, PhD, RN, FAAN, was featured in the summer 2019 issue of Pitt Nurse, a magazine produced by the University of Pittsburgh's School of Nursing.

The issue explores the different paths in nursing graduate education. Dr. Rich, a Pitt alum, talks about the importance of pursuing a doctoral degree and being a PhD nurse scientist.
