Luther College's Dance Marathon team invites everyone to the Donut Dash 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Check-in for the races begins at 9 a.m. in Bentdahl Commons with the run starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 6. The cost of the event is $20. Register here .

Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). Sophomore Study-Away Scholarship Give Away!  October 24, 7-8:30 p.m., Peace Dining Room. All sophomores are invited hear stories and engage in conversation with others who have been transformed by the study away experience. All sophomore attendees are eligible to win one of three $1000 scholarships towards your own study away experience! Pre-Registration is required by noon on October 19. At a time of heightened political relevance , Carly Hayden Foster, Luther College associate professor of political science, and Luther students Madeline Lomprey and Elena Pinnow will explore multiple perspectives on immigration law in Dreaming with Our Eyes Open: Staying Informed about DACA" at 7 p.m., October 2, in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall.

Take an alcohol screening , get a free drink! Counseling Service and Wellness in partnership with Northeast Iowa Behavioral Health are offering an opportunity to check in on your alcohol choices and learn more about low risk use. Receive a coupon for a Nordic Brew shake for completing and reviewing an alcohol use screening form. Harpsichordist Kathryn Reed , Luther College instructor of music, with the collaboration of fellow Luther College colleagues Heather Armstrong, oboe; Carol Hester, flute; and Philip Borter, Baroque cello, will present a recital featuring Baroque music in the French style. The recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, October 5, in in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, Noble Recital Hall.

Culinary archaeologist and lecturer Daniel Serra, from Malmo, Sweden, will give a presentation titled "Viking Age Food—Looking for a Lost Food Culture" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the F.W. Olin Building, Room 102. Serra's newest book "An Early Meal – a Viking Age Cookbook & Culinary Odyssey" will be available for purchase and signing at the presentation.

“The Appening” is welcome to all Baker residents! Everyone will get an introduction and tutorial on how to use the energy monitoring website, and some great snacks! All you need is an electronic device to access the website. One informational poster for each unit will be handed out, but everyone is encouraged to come! The Appening is happening on
October 4 from 7-9 p.m. in Shirley Baker Commons. The CSC looks forward to seeing you there!

Local candidates running in the November election will be available to respond to questions at a candidate forum 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 4, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. It is sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Luther College Social Work Program, Luther College Political Science Department and the Luther College Center for Ethics and Public Engagement.

FALL CAREER FAIR! Thursday, October 4, Dahl Centennial Union Lounge, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Over 45 organizations will be attending to visit with students (all years/all majors) about various internships and full-time opportunities.

Performing music from the romantic to modern eras, violist Sheila Browne will be accompanied by guest pianist Julie Nishimura at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 3, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, Noble Recital Hall.

Earth & Environment in Italy information session:  Learn first hand about the rocks, soils, streams, and mountains of Italy, and how they have influenced Italian history and culture, on Luther's Earth & Environment in Italy semester program. An information session will be held on Thursday, October 4 from 9:40 to 10:30 in Valders 384. All are welcome. Contact Laura Peterson for more information.

The Dean's Office will support Luther students who are selected to present their research at either of these conferences: the Seven Rivers Undergraduate Research Symposium at Viterbo University, LaCrosse, WI (November 9, 2018) or the Butler University Undergraduate Research Conference in Indianapolis, IN (April 12, 2019). Interested? Contact the Dean's Office , x1005, Union 262.

Counseling Service is seeking 1 Outreach Assistant to begin in Spring of 2019. Work study position of 4-5 hours weekly. Must be a self-starter, creative, and outgoing. Outreach Assistant will plan and deliver passive and active programming relating to mental health. Please review the job description . Ability to work with us in future semesters desired. First year students encouraged to apply. To apply submit a resume and cover letter to [email protected] by October 12.

The Book Shop will begin textbook returns the first part of October. We encourage you to purchase any texts still needed for the fall 2018 term. Books for second seven weeks courses will remain on the shelves for several more weeks.
