Selected readings available ahead of Ibram Kendi's February 28 Distinguished Lecture. Read the prologue of Kendi's  Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America ( National Book Award Winner)   and two other short articles. Professor Guy Nave will lead discussion Thursday, 2/21, 9:40-10:50 and Kendi will be on hand for follow-up conversation at 3:30 on the 28th . Email  cepe  to sign up and receive readings.

February Chapel will explore  Prophets and Poets  as we begin a new semester and celebrate Black History Month. The voices of  Prophets and Poets  lift questions of hope, justice, community, truth and in surprising and subversive ways. Join us for February Chapel Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the CFL as we explore connections of Scripture, poetry and faith. Join the Luther Congregation for Gospel Sunday with guest preacher, Rev. Kara Baylor, LC '92, on Sunday, February 24, 10:00 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

Seniors: Individual study carrels are again available for reservation on a first-come, first served basis in Preus Library. The carrels are located along the perimeter of the third floor and are assigned for personal use on a per-semester basis. Contact Eddy Atwell at  [email protected]  to request a senior carrel reservation for the spring. There are a limited number dedicated for this use.

Luther College Piano Quartet presents a program of chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Luther College Piano Quartet, now in its 11th year, is comprised of four Luther music faculty; Miko Kominami, piano; Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; and Philip Borter, cello.

This past Saturday night, the Luther College Symphony Orchestra performed in the Golden Hall at Vienna's famed Musikverein concert hall. Come hear why the audience of 1,200 gave a sustained ovation. The Orchestra will perform its Vienna Homecoming Concert Sunday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life.

Admissions will host a Scholar Recognition Day on Saturday, February 9 and Saturday February 23 to recognize the highest achieving admitted students at Luther, and allow those students the chance to interact with faculty and current students. Students who have been awarded the Founder's, President's or Dean's Scholarship, or the Martin Luther Award are invited to attend the event.

All high school participants involved in the Dorian Orchestra Festival will perform a concert at 5:30 p.m. Monday, February 11, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall. Both the string and chamber orchestras feature high school students from the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. Students have a chance to participate in rehearsals, lessons, masterclasses and technique classes with Luther string faculty.

High school string players participating in Luther's Dorian Chamber Ensemble Intensive will present a recital at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, February 10, in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Four chamber groups will perform in the recital, as well as students selected as soloists from their festival lessons.

Attention Students Registered for Applied Music Lessons -- If you decide to drop applied lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for fall 2018: Dropping lessons: by February 10 - No charge; by February 17 - $46 charge; by February 24 - $92 charge; by March 3 - $138 charge; after March 3 - Full charge/$510. This schedule will be followed with no exceptions .

Hot Reads for Cold Nights — Thanks to everyone who participated in our reading challenge this January! Our readers submitted 92 books over the three weeks and won 9 prizes.  Weekly prize winners:  Kira Dobberman, Janna Edrington, Jennifer Folstad, Arwen Inman, Yuen Ching Lee, Vanalika Nagarwalla.  Grand prize winners:  Christopher Barrett, Lauren Luoma, Gwen Strand.

Area musicians are now invited to enroll for the Luther College Community Music School which offers group classes, private lessons and SoDa (Song and Dance) Club. Group classes will be offered Wednesday mornings to students in grades 3-8. SoDa Club, a community youth choir available to students in grades K-8, will be held Monday nights.  Tiffany Patterson , Vanderbilt University associate professor of African American and diaspora studies, and history, and director of undergraduate studies in African and African diaspora studies, will give the Luther College spring convocation address at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, February 7, in the Center for Faith and Life, Main Hall.

Annual Wii Bowling Tournament in the Book Shop — Team entries are due Friday, February 15 and the Wii Bowling tournament starts the week of February 11-March 15. Gather four of your friends or co-workers and take a mental wellness break in the Book Shop. Retired staff and faculty are welcome too. Please sign your team up in the Book Shop or online on the Recreational Services website .
