Waste Study Research Volunteers
A team of researchers at UC Berkeley and
UC Agriculture and Natural Resource's Nutrition Policy Institute
are collaborating on a waste study in San Francisco schools, which are transitioning school meals from prepackaged to buffet style or in house prepared meals. Part of this study will be measuring plate waste to look at the amount of food waste (unconsumed food) and material waste (ie. plastic) created during the lunch program, both before and after the new styles of service launch.
Volunteers are needed to help with material waste collection for the study. The methodology is straightforward and there will be thorough training beforehand. This work will not be physically intensive. This is not only to provide research opportunities but also to find means to collaborate on waste reduction efforts.
Who:
8-10 volunteers
When: early March to late May, roughly 2 hours per site visit (during lunch hours) with 22 site visits (2 visits per 11 schools)
