March 10, 2019
Now Meeting at 500 E. Colorado Blvd.
Sunday Worship Service: 11:30 am, Chapel

Our Core Values:
Spiritual Growth. Welcome. Justice-seeking

Almost 40 folks gathered for a Shrove Tuesday celebration at the front of FUMC. We ate pancakes, heard some jazz music from the Poly Jazz Band and then worked on an Alleluia Banner which will be rolled up during Lent and then unrolled on Easter Sunday! Lent has begun!
Reflection for Worship. . .

Time to Give Thanks
Deuteronomy 26:1-11

In our text for worship this First Sunday in Lent, we are asked to imagine that God has set aside a wonderful gift for us  - in the case of the text, it is land and a harvest.  And God's people are asked to do a couple of things - first to take the initial part of the harvest and go to a dedicated space for celebrating God and thanking God for the abundance of this new land.  Also, we are to acknowledge in front of a leader - in this case a priest - that this inheritance is from God, and that we accept it as a faithful community that dedicates itself to God.  Next we are to tell the story of our experience of God - who we are, where we were born and how God has redeemed us;  and finally, we are to welcome all who are among us - native born or other - to celebrate God's bounty with us as part of our community!  In a sermon entitled "Time to Give Thanks!" We will consider together these simple steps for a community and see if we keep them in mind as we begin a new chapter of the life of our community.....return the first fruits of our " harvest" to God, acknowledge where the inheritance does from, tell the story of how we got to the place where we worship and live now - and welcome all to celebrate with us as a community.  What does that look like in our context?  Come join us in worship as we reflect on that together this Sunday at 11:30AM in the Chapel at the First United Methodist Church.

Rev. John H. Pomeroy

Also on Sunday

Connie Washburn will be on vacation this coming Sunday, March 10th. Dr. Linda Zoolalian substitutes.

Coffee Hour will be held in the Youth Lounge this Sunday due to a previous commitment FUMC had scheduled in the Fellowship Hall (this will happen on occasion). Normally we would have our Coffee Hour in the outside Cloister area but with the cold weather we have opted to have it in their spacious Youth Lounge. Where is it?? Just on the 2nd floor right below our offices. Sallie will have the coffee there and will provide a few goodies. If others wish to bring something to share, feel free!! You may take the stairs to the 2nd floor and walk down the hallway and the room is on the right. Or you may use the elevator. Staff will be on hand to help guide us. It also gives us another chance to explore this beautiful building! Come up and see our offices as well!

The Women's Scholarship Fund Committee will be having a meeting at 12:30 on Sunday in the Co-Pastors' office.

Lent
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday March 6th and we invite you to join members from other area UCC churches (Altadena, Eagle Rock, San Marino, Glendale, La Canada) in an Ash Wednesday Worship Service to be held at the Congregational Church of La Cañada. Dinner is served to us between 6-6:45 p.m. and the worship service will be at 7:00 in their Sanctuary.

Lent has been a time in the Church when the faithful have engaged in intentional study, fasting and service. We invite you to select something to do (or to abstain from doing) this Lenten season. One gift to you is a Lenten Reflection booklet being put together by various members and friends of FCC. It will be available on Sunday and then electronically starting next week. Using the texts assigned during the Lent season, our folks have been invited to reflect on their text and how it intersects and informs their own lives. Many thanks to those who have agreed to write a reflection this year!

Another idea would be for you to select a friend to partner with during the upcoming 40 days. You could check in regularly, read something together, pray for each other, and be intentional about supporting one another during this time. Try something!! It will make your Easter morning even sweeter to prepare and deepen your faith during the season that culminates on Easter Sunday!!!

Church School
will be led by Neva Orr/Grace Rinck this Sunday in our main office space on the 3rd floor - room 302 at the top of the stairs.

Transition Update
Our phones seem to be mostly working!!! Our office number is still (626) 795-0696. Call us! We do get dropped calls once in a while and we are working on it with our service provider. You may reach any staff via their emails.  Normal office hours for Nina are Monday-Thursday 9-12 and 1:30-5:30. Pastoral Staff is also available on Sundays.

Sallie continues to work on signage and we now have signs on our three office doors and exterior signs for Sunday. We are still working on the  design for our large exterior sign which will hang on the Colorado Blvd. side of the building on a regular basis.  We used to have three staff working on Sunday mornings at our old space - two to prep the coffee/tea and worship space as well as to broker any needs that come up and a third person to provide security on our first floor. Now we just have two staff persons - Sallie and an assistant each Sunday. Since we are renters we have to put out signage in the front and back of the church, bring out all our supplies each week; some of our supplies are on the third floor and the kitchen is quite far from the Chapel and Bride's Room where a small coffee station is provided for our early arrivers/choir each week. Many thanks to Sallie for continuing to oversee our needs and work behind the scenes to make things run so smoothly. We also continue to forge healthy relationships with the FUMC staff and members so everyone feels comfortable together.
