Inclusionary Practices Project Update

TIES Center, UW Haring Center, OSPI and CSTP visited Mark Twain Elementary
CSTP is assisting OSPI in implementing the Inclusionary Practices Project established by the legislature in the 2019 session. This monthly update provides you with some information about the Statewide Professional Development Cadre, the TIES Center and demonstration sites.

PD Cadre:
  • The Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD) is in the process of choosing districts for the pilot phase. They will be starting to deliver curriculum to pilot groups in April. Information regarding opportunities to participate in the next round of training (summer 2020 through spring 2021) will be available in May.
  • The Center for Change in Transition Services (CCTS) will work with school teams statewide to increase inclusionary practices in general education, focusing on partnerships between Special Education and Career Technical Education (CTE) classrooms. Interested school teams need to complete a confidential 5-minute survey to inform upcoming professional development and training opportunities and connect with Kris Hirschmann, CCTS Director of Transition Services.
  • SWIFT Education Center is accepting applications from principals and their school leadership teams to participate in professional development based on Leading Equity-based MTSS for All Students.    Summer 2020 and Fall 2020 learning groups are forming now.  Contact [email protected] to learn how your team can transform your teaching and learning systems to improve equity, inclusion and outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • In January and February, the Washington Education Association (WEA) has had about 650 educators sign up for inclusionary practices online courses through e-Learning for Educators. Because of the overwhelming response, they will receive additional funding educator increase access to online inclusionary practices trainings. Participants are primarily practicing teachers but we have had para-educators and administrators. WEA had a design team create training materials for a face-to-face training called STEM Integration and Inclusionary Practices. These training materials are being used by a cadre of trainers from different regions across the state, who provide multiple trainings to teachers, para-educators, and administrators. Five trainings occurred in January and 48 more are scheduled between February and June.

TIES Center: The Lake Washington School District (LWSD) was recently selected to participate in the state Inclusionary Practices Professional Development Project and in a unique partnership with OSPI, the University of Washington Haring Center for Inclusive Education, the Center for Strengthening the Teaching Profession (CSTP), and the TIES Center (a national technical assistance center on inclusive practices and policies). Through this, LWSD will have access to intensive technical assistance to create sustainable change in kindergarten through grade 8 so that students with significant cognitive disabilities can fully engage in the same instructional and non-instructional activities as their general education peers while also receiving additional specialized instruction in a way that meets individual learning needs. LWSD was selected because of its work to create a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), its leadership structure, and commitment to equity and inclusion.

Demonstration Sites: The Demonstration Sites have been selected and an announcement will be made later this month with information on scheduling and registering for visits. Stay tuned!
